Leave No Trace Training on Econfina Creek

  • January 24, 2012 · 9:00 AM

Note: This Activity is open only to Members of the Florida Trail Association and requires registration on the FTA website.  This is a two day, one-overnight F-Troop event, hosted by FTA Staff. The activity begins at 9 am 24 January, and ends at 5 pm on 25 January.

Join FTA staff and instructor Janet Herrick for this scenic hike along the Econfina Creek. Participants will meet at Scott Rd Trailhead at 9 am Tuesday morning and begin sorting food and gear for an overnight backpacking trip and Leave No Trace Training. We will begin the actual hike at a different location than Scott Rd.  We will hike about 5 miles south along the Econfina Creek to Devil's Hole, set up a base camp and continue LNT instruction. Students will overnight at a backcountry campsite Tuesday evening. The course will resume the next morning and we will hike further south to our exit point where we will shuttle the group back to the original starting location of the hike. Participants will learn all about Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics, become more confident backpackers, and get instruction on responsible recreational travel through a variety of environments. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a certification as a Leave No Trace Trainer and will be able to host Leave No Trace Awareness courses for others. This event is intended for hikers of all experience levels. Food will be provided by FTA Staff.  If you are a member of the Florida Trail Association and wish to register, go to www.floridatrail.org and find the F-Troop site, or you can go directly to the F-Troop site, www.f-troop.org then go to the "Volunteer Project Schedule" page.

FTA, SCA, F-Troop, in brief: FTA Staff hosts F-Troop events. These t are usually field classes or trail construction events, scattered thru FL, and FTA members from all over state are invited. Ogle & Mason are FTA Staffers responsible for these events. They in turn hire Student Conservation Assoc youth for typically a season at a time to help them with their job, including support of F-Troop events.

Diverse group with a single purpose: Leave No Trace, get better at it and be able to pass it on to others. We helped and got to know each other on one of the most beautiful trails in NW FL. Still not clear on F-troop/ SCA/ FTA interweavings but I'm grateful. I still can't believe that more people didn't come. I'm inspired to try to go into LNT more deeply.

This was a wonderful event. Great people and a lot of new information on Leave NO Trace. This is something that can be shared thru Mary and myself at other LNT events.

Thanks. I don't want to be a drag on others though. Am bringing hiking poles!

If you already have a heavy load, I think the leader will take that into account when distributing food at trailhead.

Looking at weather forcast for Alford, FL (32420) the night low is 55° and chance of rain only 20%. Trying to decide between the light and heavy sleeping bag. Worried about the weight of FTA-supplied food and gear in addition to my heavy old equipment. Any thoughts?

Caroling, I spoke to one of the organizers, Eric Mason. No cost. Food will be provided by F-Troop. We meet at the Scott Rd trailhead at 9 am (CST) on the 24th.

A reminder to all - This event requires FTA membership, and meetup members are not necessarily FTA Members. FTA membership is done by signing up on www.floridatrail.org and requires a small fee, but it's a great deal with all the benefits.

I'm so excited. I have wanted to camp here ever since we hiked it last year. Too bad Renee is in Bangkok! She wanted to come too. Registration said bring food, then said FTA providing food. Hope that gets clarified. I kept wondering if there would be a fee and didn't see any. Wha...? It would be nice to see a map, know where the exit point is.
