Misery Mountain via Mattison Hollow to Taconic Crest Trail - amended

Amendment: I have researching this hike for a week and have been aggressively researching the trail for the last two days. In contacting the trailmaster of the TCT (taconic crest trail), he informed me that the hike was a great one, but when it hits the 2 mile mark, it makes a decent incline for the next 1/2 mile. He stated that it was an incline that surpassed berlin mtn incline. He is over 70 yo an said that he had to stop 3x in the last 1/2 mile to rest. Now, I am telling you this because I felt it was important to tell you. As an option , i am beginning the hike off route 22 and snowshoeing along the snowcovered hollow road for 1 mile until we hit the trailhead. From there , we will hike the mattison hollow trail to the incline. If we decide that it is not our cup of tea, we turn around and return for a 6.2 mile total snowshoe. If we wish to go further, then we decide to go altogether. Either way, the trailmaster said it is a great hike either way. Please understand that I am still going and have plans to meet at kmart either way. The misinformation about the last 1/2 mile of the trail was not intentional....If you choose to not attend ...fully understood. Time to enjoy the snow!
This snowshoe hike is from Mattison Hollow in Cherry Plain (route 22 ) up to the Taconic Crest trail. It is an moderate snowshoe hike up to to Taconic Crest Trail. Or we can cook hotdogs and drink lattes at the top and call it the day. I am looking at a hike around 7 miles or so.. The trailhead parking will be tricky due to lack of space....we may manage. we will have to be creative and take as few vehicles as possible.
I am requesting that those not meeting at kmart , meet us in the berlin hs parking lot. The trailhead has limited parking! In fact, we will park at the end of Mattison Hollow road and hike in. We first meet at Berlin hs for anyone that wants to meet in the vacinity..I
The most picturesque access trail to the Taconic Crest Trail in the Misery Mountain area is located in Mattison Hollow. This trail is approximately 2.6 miles long. It begins on Mattison Hollow Road in Cherry Plain, New York. Throughout the journey you will be surrounded by towering hills, visible primarily when foliage is at least nearly absent. Also, several small sparkling brooks flow into the cascading Kronk Brook from many directions.
The ascent is 1200 ft - 2600 ft within a couple miles. Once we hit the summits (yes...they are not actually identifiable) then we can decide our next adventure. I will have several options available for the group.
This is a snowshoe hike.....come prepared for fresh snow and fun! Come prepared with good gear - no cotton! Gear would include gaiters or snowpants, snowshoes, wool socks and an extra pair, high boots, layered clothing, ans maybe poles (not necessary).No cotton pants or socks please.... We aim to keep all the toes warm of the hikers that dare to hike this with us. LOL
I would like most of us to meet at kmart. The reason for this is simple. Parking at trailhead is limited....almost null in winter.
Driving time to trailhead in cherry plain is 25 minutes from Troy. 40 minutes from Latham. 45minutes form Albany
This will be an interesting hike! Decent , but different terrain......trail runs up and then along the side crest....should be a very cool snowshoe. Please make sure you are in reasonable shape before deciding to join us.
