Members,

Re: Hong Kong Hiking Meetup 2013 in Review

It seems that HK Hiking Meetup can only get bigger and better! In 2013 we scheduled 791 events – that translates to more than 2 events a day! Our membership has also hit 9,500, a net increase of more than 3,000 from 2012. As a hiking group which takes an active role in contributing back to society, we have shown we are a group with heart by our participation in numerous events.

As with previous years, HK Hiking Meetup remains one of the most active participants in the Oxfam Trailwalker. This year, we fielded 28 teams and targeted to raise HK$1 million for Oxfam, As Dec 18, we've already raised nearly HK$900,000.  Many thanks to Speeto for coordinating the event and of course, much credit also goes to the fantastic support crew – coordinated by the ever reliable Narelle – as well as the volunteers who were there to clean up the trails for Oxfam after the event. A big THANK YOU to everyone for their time and efforts!

Barclay’s Moontrekker, another key event in the race calendar, also saw members from HK Hiking Meetup volunteering their services by manning check points and cleaning up the trails after the event. Thanks go to Tony B for coordinating the event.

The beaches in Hong Kong also got a bit of sprucing up as HK Hiking Meetup members participated in beach cleanups by the Hong Kong Cleanup Challenge for which we won 2 medals. Special mention goes to Francois for coordinating the cleanups!

Other initiatives that Hong Kong Hiking Meetup was a part of in 2013 include the launch of the GPS Hiker Tracking Service which aims to help fellow hikers stay safe on the trails. Through hikes, we also raised over HK$25,000 which were donated to Red Cross for disaster relief efforts in the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.

Our activities in HK Hiking Meetup also cross international borders – in April 2013, Narelle organised a trekking trip to Nepal which saw her and other active members such as Newman, Philip, Luigi, Gloria, Echo, Jojo, Kate and April setting foot on the magnificent Himalayas. Well done, guys!

As a group, HK Hiking Meetup has also been gaining exposure on various media fronts. We have been interviewed by local newspapers and magazines, and our website has seen 224,000 visits with 1,011,000 page views in 2013. Our Facebook page fan count has also hit 3,700 in 2 years. To further build our sense of identity, we have launched our very own theme song and now have 2 new T-shirts incorporating our group logo.

From our quarterly Assistant Organizers (AO) training sessions, we now have a pool of 48 AOs – look forward to more hikes in 2014 by this bunch! We also extend our thanks to retiring AOs who have contributed their time and efforts in making HK Hiking Meetup what it is today. Most of all, we’d like to thank all of you, our members, for your participation and help in spreading the good word about HK Hiking Meetup.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year…See you on the trails in 2014!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
