Join Carpe Futurum, the local chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance, in making gifts for young adults who don't have families to give them gifts this holiday season!
The Orphan Foundation of America (OFA) is a nonprofit that helps former foster children become successful adults. In most states, foster youth leave the social services system when they turn 18. In the eyes of the court they?re adults, but few 18-year-olds are emotionally, mentally, or financially able to support themselves. Without someone to guide them, too many end up homeless, unemployed, incarcerated or pregnant. The OFA advocates for and provides services to foster teens.
In a project headed by Kristen S., our chapter is going to help bring some holiday spirit to these young adults who beat the odds and succeeded in making it to college by making them small, festive care packages. These bags will not only brighten their days and let them know someone is thinking of them, but the gift will also provide a much needed sugar rush during or after final exams for their college semester. There are THREE ways you can help!1. Attend our bag-packing event. When:
December 7, 2010 from 7-9pmWhere:
Burke Centre Library, small Conference Room, at 5935 Freds Oak Road, Burke, VA 22015
Because the room is so small, we ask that you RSVP.
Come and help us assemble the bags. We have been asked to make 50 to 100.2. Make some bags on your own and give them to us on or by December 7.
Each bag must include: 4 packets of hot chocolate mix and 3-7 pieces of festive candy. Bags should be tied closed with a ribbon. Anything else you wish to include is optional (small "Happy Holidays!" note, additional candy, tea, pen/pencil, stickers, other little goodies). See the photos here for examples. You can make just one or you can make as many as you like. Please contact Kristen S. or Kate to arrange a time for you to hand over the bags you've made. Or you can just stop by Burke Centre Library on December 7 from 7pm to 9pm and drop them off with us in the small Conference Room.3. Donate money to cover the cost of supplies.
Buying enough hot chocolate and candy for 100 bags is getting expensive! If you cannot make the event and don't have the time to make any bags yourself (it's the busy holiday season; we totally understand that) you can donate money to help us cover the cost. See Kristen or Kate at a meetup (there will be a donation can out at the DADA Yule Party on December 4) or donate via PayPal
(though we ask you donate no less than $3 or PayPal will eat all of it in transaction fees)
