Paddle in the New Year

Host: Jim Cruse

Host contact:[masked] (call or text)

Assistant host: Needed

Assistant host contact: N/A at this time

Let’s meet at Stumpy Lake in Virginia Beach and paddle in the New Year. Stumpy Lake almost always has several types of waterfowl present along with the possibility of Bald Eagles soaring overhead. Access to the launch area is through the entrance to the golf course at GPS coordinates
[masked],[masked] from Indian river Road. I will be driving a silver Chevrolet P/U with mounted kayak racks. The parking area is on the left after you cross the small bridge. Please observe the one-way signs and enter from the second driveway.

Parking at the launch site is somewhat limited (about 10 spots) but there is no problem with dropping off your boat and parking further down the driveway at the Pro Shop. We can shuttle drivers from the Pro Shop back to the launch if necessary (about 1/10 mile) to expedite things.

There is no charge for this event and it is open to all boats and family members. This is an easy paced paddle suitable for all skill levels. Please remember that PFD’s are mandatory and to bring drinking water/snacks. Dress for the water temperature regardless of what the air temp turns out to be.

Stumpy Lake uses a “roller ramp” launch system which is fantastic. You won’t have to get your feet wet to launch. Recovery is equally easy.

Last New Year’s Day presented us with “balmy weather” let’s hope for a repeat this year. This paddle with be canceled only in the event of rain or heaven forbid a blinding snow storm.

If folks would like we can always meet at one of the local pubs for some snacks and warming libations after the paddle. If you have any questions contact me at[masked]-1137.

This paddle has also been announced on the Hampton Roads Kayaking meetup site. This will be a great chance to meet new paddling buddies

Please check back often in case of changes

Ok, so they are calling for a little rain tomorrow. What a better way to open a new year than defying the elements and adding a little excitement to your life. There’s a 50% chance of sunshine tomorrow the other 50% is for scattered showers with temps in the high 40’s. As always dress for possible immersion. PFD’s are required and wetsuits/drysuits are highly recommended. On the very serious side, if you can’t dress properly for these conditions I would rather see you cancel and not attend than show up and put yourself and possibly others in danger. If you decide not to attend and have already RSVP’ed with YES, please either change that RSPV or call me at[masked]

Do you have to have your own paddle boat, or is there one available that I could use?

Lisa, if you don't mind paddling a small boat I have access to an Old Town Otter xe that you can use. It's an 8 or 9 ft. long recreational boat that is stable and responsive.

Sure that would be fine. I'm not for sure yet if I'll be able to attend the event yet. Will keep you posted. Thanks!

I won't know my work schedule for that day until a couple weeks from now, but if my schedule cooperates I will co-sponsor and join Jim.
