Sally will be leading this paddling trip from her own back yard to Bennetts Creek Park, a 50-acre park, located on Bennett's Creek Park Road off of Shoulders Hill Road (Route 659) in the northern section of Suffolk. Bennett's Creek Park offers two free boat ramps that access the Nansemond River, a playground, tennis courts, restrooms, three covered shelters that can be reserved for use, a nature trail, open fields, a fishing and crabbing pier with handicap accessible features, and plenty of fresh air and sunshine. If picnic shelters are not previously reserved, they may be used on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information on the park itself, please call the park.
Trip leaders are "hosts", not professional guides. They are not necessarily trained in first aid nor CPR, and do not always carry first aid equipment nor safety devices for your use.
This paddling trip is flat water and sheltered shorelines. There should be great views and pretty scenery. This will be about a two hour paddle with time to talk and get to know each other. Bring your camera and share your pictures with the group after the trip.
YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN KAYAK, PADDLE AND PFD. NO EQUIPMENT OR INSTRUCTION PROVIDED.
Supervised, well-behaved children are welcome in the company of a parent.
NO PETS on this paddle.
Trip is fair weather only - will be cancelled in the event of rain!
Keep in mind that this are is tidal, so consult a tide chart and keep in mind that at low tide, the bottom is very soft mud.
Departure: We will gather at the "Blooms" grocery store at 13478 Carrollton Blvd, Carollton. I am asking you to be the parking lot by 8:45AM Sunday morning so we can leave by 9:00am. If you use Map Quest or another mapping program it should give you good directions. Once you pull in the grocery store parking lot you will see a Sonic at the front of the lot. Park near there. You'll see Sally's black pickup and yellow kayak.
From there Sally will lead you to her house to put-in and continue to Bennetts Creek Park to leave return vehicles....or vice versa.
Water: Bring your own water, snacks, etc. No food or water provided.
Other: Be sure to bring bug repellant, a hat, and sunscreen.
You, and you alone, are responsible for your personal safety!
For the safety of the group as a whole, trip participants must agree to abide by these guidelines and follow instructions of the trip leader. Please, don't attend if you can't swim.
While on the water, all paddlers should wear PFDs and clothes appropriate to the water temperature. Boats must have watertight bulkheads or flotation to prevent the kayak from swamping when capsized. All paddlers should have, and know how to use, a pump and paddle float. On the day of the trip, leaders may refuse to admit participants if they feel that the safety of any paticipant may be endangered, so if you are not sure, discuss it with the leader in advance!
