Halau Ho弛la Ka Mana O Hawai段 - Traditional Hawaiian Culture and Hula School - under
the direction of Kumu Hula Frank Keli'i Chang is open to those interested in learning
about hula and Hawaii. Kumu Keli段 dedicates his time to his halau (school), with
groups in both Dallas and Houston. His haumana (students) travel from near and far,
some even outside the state of Texas, to be under his guidance. He is one of the only
Kumus today who still teach traditional dances. His halau learns not only the hula,
but the culture, the language and the history of Hawai段, for all of these go hand in
hand. He desires nothing more than to perpetuate the native culture of Hawai段, and
welcomes any person who shares in this to join halau and kokua (help) with keeping
the culture alive!
Open to adults and youth. No dance experience is required, only the interest to learn
hula. Each session is two hours. Classes include but not limited to - Dancing,
Chanting, Singing, Hula Implements, Costume Making and more! Class fee for the first
class is $5; $15 drop-in; $40/4 classes. Class fee taught by Kumu Keli'i is $20 for
drop-in or $10 add'l for those who have signed up for 4 sessions at a time.
Newbies: Please wear comfy exercise or dance clothes. Ladies-- bring pareo or pa'u skirt if you have one. Gents--comfy shorts or sweat pants and t-shirt. Proper Hula attire : Pau skirt; white T-shirt; hair tied back with fern or flower. We will be dancing with bare feet. Please bring some water to hydrate yourselves during class.
