I apologize if I prematurely posted an event without permission first. I guess every group has there own way of doing things and I wasn't familiar with yours. I support both LA-SPCA and the Humane Society's efforts in doing the right thing for our furry friends. I did not know that the Volunteers for Animals group was specifically for the Humane Society. I did not mean to step on anyone's toes, I was just trying to help the animals. Larry apparentely the event has been removed because it is not a Humane Society event, so it should not conflict with your workshop. Below are Jeff's responses to me for the event:
Jeff changed the venue for "Dog wash."
Removed location: Whole Foods Market 5600 Magazine St New Orleans, LA
"You really didn't follow the proper protocol in announcing this dog wash. Did you organize it or are you just assisting?
I am organizing the event. I do not work for either the SPCA or the Humane Society. I work as a financial adviser with Merrill Lynch. I have and will continue to organize, contribute, and volunteer my time to any and all animal causes both in Louisiana and Georgia (moved from Georgia a year ago). I was not looking for any help in organizing the event or donations from the group, as I have done all of that. I did however want to use the "Volunteers for Animals" page to promote the event and see if members wanted to donate their time and/or have their dog washed. The event will be at Whole Foods Uptown, on Sat. Sept. 24th from 10-4. Vets, trainers, groomers, and kid games will all be there to help our furry friends. I look forward to helping the Humane Society and other pet organizations in future events.

The meetup group, Volunteers for Animals, is the support group for the Humane Society of
Louisiana. While we always try and help other humane groups, our primary and single focus is to raise funds for the Humane Society of Louisiana, which does not receive any federal, state or city funding. The LaSPCA, on the other hand, receives 1.9 million in tax dollars each year from the city of New Orleans on a contractual basis. This meetup group tries to raise funds and provide volunteer support that will assist our humane activities and our no-kill facility in Tylertown, Mississippi, which houses more than 200 formerly abused and neglected. Also, as a courtesy members should always get permission from me or another group administrator before posting any announcements.

The Humane Society of Louisiana offers a variety of volunteer opportunities that can easily fit into everyone's schedule. Our group was established in New Orleans 1988, and we have a long history of advocating for the protection of animals, whether it is in the classroom, the State Capitol or in the courtroom. Our group also operates a no-kill animal sanctuary located in Tylertown, Mississippi. To encourage a healthy plant-based diet and lifestyle, our group also started the New Orleans Vegetarian Society which has more than 500 members. For more information, please visit us at meetup.com, as well.
There are any number of ways to get involved as a volunteer. Here is just a partial list:
- join our investigations department. These volunteers respond to hundreds of complaints each year by visiting households or businesses where abuse may be taking place or by working with law enforcement officials to ensure that the animal protection laws are upheld. We also have volunteer caseworkers who monitor complaints, once they have been filed with our organization. These volunteers meet throughout the year.
- join our humane education department and become one of our pet care educators! These volunteers visit schools, YMCAs, nursing homes and other venues throughout the year, educating the young and old about the need to properly care for all animals.
- join our outreach team and help us man tables and booths at different festivals and events around town.
We also encourage you to join our group as a dues-pay member. Dues
are only $20.00 for individual or $35.00 for family. Checks may be sent
to the Humane Society of Louisiana, P.O. Box 740321, New Orleans, LA
70174 or make a donation online throughout our website at www.
