Please cross post this announcement to your family, friends, and co-workers!
Rupert The Puppy
Meows, woofs and wags to all of our kind recent donors who extended a helping hand to Louisiana's animals at the second anniversary of Katrina. Friends like you have helped us save hundreds of puppies, like Rupert, since the hurricane.
As you know, the Humane Society of Louisiana was never prepared to operate a full scale disaster relief shelter. Since the nation's worst natural disaster happened in our own backyard, however, we've helped save thousands of lives and have continued to keep our programs in operation. In spite of debilitating losses, like the destruction of our New Orleans shelter, our ongoing commitment to the animals we serve has driven us to keep our doors open.
Soon, we'll kick off our 'Paws to Rebuild' campaign, an exciting recovery plan for our charity. With your support, we'll continue to serve the animals of New Orleans and rural Louisiana, as we have since 1988, in even more innovative and effective ways.
Before we can move forward with our vision for a brighter tomorrow, however, we must once again ask for your help RIGHT NOW. We urgently need to raise $20,000 within the next two weeks to meet the immediate needs of our animals.
Will you please help by making a contribution today? Even by providing a small gift, you'll truly be a guardian angel to our shelter animals in exile. We're working as hard as we can to raise funds, but we simply need more assistance at this most difficult of times.
WHY THE URGENCY?
We wouldn't ask for your help, if we weren't doing everything in our power to raise the funds we need. Board members, longtime supporters and volunteers have dug deep into their own pocketbooks and wallets, in support of this worthy cause.
The sad truth is, we have been disappointed over and over again in recent months. Eagerly anticipated funds have been delayed or have failed to arrive in time to meet our immediate needs. In the meantime, our dedicated staff members have struggled, foregoing their modest wages, to help care for HSL's animals in these lean times. Volunteers and friends have also been quick to use their own resources for pet food, toys and treats. But we can only do so much on our own. That is why we are asking for help to cover some of these costs:
* veterinary bills in excess of $14,000 (just a fraction of what we owe to our patient veterinary partners!);
* emergency shelter property taxes of $650;
* New Orleans mortgage payment of $750 (while our shelter building was destroyed, we are still trying to sell the property to finance our rebuilding plans; our insurance did not even pay off our mortgage)
* animal transport vehicle insurance costing $4500, which will cover our vans and vehicles used for cruelty investigations, adoption days and supply runs for the next six months.
DOBBY is still looking for a home!
ABOUT OUR EMERGENCY SHELTER
Of course, apart from the $20,000 we need now, we'll be hard at work raising funds for the massive operating costs for a given month. Week after week, with no fundraising staff and no operating support from the big, national groups, we must generate funds to pay for food, supplies, veterinary care, pet transport, animal caregivers, animal care supplies, utilities, taxes and insurance required to keep our doors open.
If you've already given recently, or if you simply can't offer any support at this time, please know that we sincerely thank you for your generosity and for caring. If you can help, though, please join me in making the most generous donation you can today! On behalf of the animals who rely on us to ask for what they need, we thank you so much for listening.
