This group is sponsored by HumanistsMN, which brings together people who, without supernatural beliefs, aspire to lead lives of personal fulfillment and contribute to the greater good of humanity and the planet through reason, science, compassion, and creativity.
If you believe in those principles or are interested in learning about them or want to help others learn about humanism join us for our meetings, events, and social times.
We usually have a regular Humanist Community Gathering on the 3rd Saturday of the month but will send out a reminder to members when the topic/speaker is set (or check the calendar!).
In addition, there are many other smaller meetups during the month.
Meetings are open to anyone who is interested in humanism and wants to meet other humanists. But please considering joining HumanistsMN to help support us financially and build the power of humanism in our society. Join here!

SMART Recovery Support Group

SMART Recovery is a stigma-free and self-empowering secular program serving those with an addictive behavior. This post is for promotional purposes only and no rsvp is required to respect the confidentiality of attendees.
Anyone seeking a secular recovery program is invited to attend our weekly support group sessions -- whether to tackle a particular substance or an activity/process addiction. Participants design and implement their own recovery plan to create a more balanced, purposeful, fulfilling, and meaningful life.
Sessions are led by Kim T., a trained volunteer SMART facilitator, who draws on evidence-based motivational and cognitive behavioral theories. Within a mutually supportive group environment, SMART participants are empowered to develop their ability to:
- Build and maintain motivation
- Cope with urges and cravings
- Manage thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
- Live a balanced life
Whether you are seeking a course of recovery for yourself or have been mandated to attend a recovery program, SMART Recovery provides a path to life beyond addiction.

De-growth: Downscaling the Global Economy @ HumanistsMN Community Gatherings

This is one of the core concepts of Degrowth, an economic theory and social movement arguing that capitalism’s requirement of constant economic growth is the driving force behind climate change and ecological overshoot. Degrowth advocates for a purposeful and humane transition away from consumerism and GDP-based measures of success and toward a system that enables human thriving in balance with ecological limits.
HumanistsMN member Leah Tabbert will give a presentation on the basic theory of Degrowth and lead a discussion about how it might guide our choices and actions as humanists.
The presentation and discussion will be from 3:00—4:30 followed by socializing and refreshments with other Saturday session attendees in the gallery.

Queer-and-Secular Community Connection @ HumanistsMN Community Gatherings
First Unitarian Society, 900 Mount Curve Avenue, Minneapolis, MN, USAre you queer and non-religious? Looking for a relaxed and open space to build community based on shared lived-experiences and inclusive values? Then come join us for this ongoing series sponsored by HumanistsMN!
We’ll begin with a short presentation about HumanistsMN and consider how humanism can support the LGBTQIA+ community. Then we’ll open up the conversation for attendees to share their experiences as members of the queer community. Together we will brainstorm how to build an inclusive secular space that helps lift up, support, and shelter the queer community in these difficult political times.
The session will run from 3:00—4:30, facilitated by HumanistsMN member, Zach Armstrong. Afterwards, join other Humanist Gathering session attendees in the gallery for refreshments and socializing.
More about the group facilitator: Zach (pronouns: he/him) grew up in the Jehovah's Witnesses religion, but as a young adult, he deconstructed his faith and discovered his sexuality which led to total shunning by his community and family. Recognizing the importance of building a safe community, Zach hopes this series will help fill an important gap. His professional background is in statistics and data science. His hobbies/interests include paleoart, evolutionary biology, piano, musical theater, queer theory and activism, counter-apologetics and philosophy of science/metaphysics.
