About us
This group is sponsored by HumanistsMN, which brings together people who, without supernatural beliefs, aspire to lead lives of personal fulfillment and contribute to the greater good of humanity and the planet through reason, science, compassion, and creativity.
If you believe in those principles or are interested in learning about them or want to help others learn about humanism join us for our meetings, events, and social times.
We usually have a regular Humanist Community Gathering on the 3rd Saturday of the month but will send out a reminder to members when the topic/speaker is set (or check the calendar!).
In addition, there are many other smaller meetups during the month.
Meetings are open to anyone who is interested in humanism and wants to meet other humanists. But please considering joining HumanistsMN to help support us financially and build the power of humanism in our society. Join here!

Humanists in Action: Rally for the Minnesota Equal Rights Amendment!
Minnesota State Capitol, 75 Rev Dr Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard., Saint Paul, MN, USOn Thursday, March 12th, at 10:00am, join with fellow humanists and like-minded friends to rally at the state capitol for the Minnesota Equal Rights Amendment and demand dignity and respect for all Minnesotans!
RSVP here for the rally to stay up-to-date on all the details.
Look for me on the 12th, wearing an HMN t-shirt, in the rotunda of the state capitol, by the eastern archway (archway to the right when you’re facing the podium in the rotunda). Give yourself extra time to enter the capitol building as security screening is happening at the entrances. Entry via the capitol steps is no longer available; you can enter behind and UNDER the capitol steps, though.
We're watching fundamental rights unravel across the country. But here in Minnesota, we have the chance to do something powerful: protect them in the state constitution. Now, more than ever, it's important to make it clear and concrete where Minnesota stands. Do join us on March 12th at the Capitol!
HumanistsMN is committed to fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and caring community for all our members. We welcome everyone who shares our humanist principles. We acknowledge the dignity and worth of all people - every race, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, social class, abilities, or disabilities. We actively promote a culture of respect, belonging, and compassion as we strive to create an environment where everyone can thrive. By participating in HumanistsMN events, you agree to conduct yourself in accordance with these values.

Humanist Film Series: Short Film Festival
First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, 900 Mount Curve Ave., Minneapolis, MN, USMarch is Academy Awards month so on Friday, March 13, 2026 we’ll do the first ever HFS Short Film Festival. We’ll screen a selection of six Oscar-winning short films, a mix of animation and live action, including The Red Balloon (G, 1956) and The Man Who Planted Trees (G, 1987).
Come and discover some rarely-seen but truly excellent, discussion-worthy motion pictures that are only half-an-hour long or less.Arrive around 6:30 PM for a little socializing; as always, bring your own beverage. Snacks will be provided but feel free to bring something to share if you'd like. The films start at 7:00 PM followed by some post-movie banter for those who care to linger and mingle.
Looking ahead: on Friday, April 10, 2026, we’ll recognize the life and contributions of Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek and AHA’s Humanist of the Year in 1991, by viewing the director’s cut version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (G, 1979). Afterwards, HumanistsMN own Scott Lohman (past president and host of the HMN Science Fiction Book Group) will give us an insightful and entertaining half-hour presentation on the enduring cultural and scientific influences of Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry. Come learn how humanism is literally woven into the very fiber of the universe inhabited by Captains Kirk, Picard and Janeway.
This film series is co-sponsored by HumanistsMN and First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, a humanist congregation. Please consider supporting one or both of these associations to help cover our costs and build the humanist movement. Click on the embedded links above to donate or join.

- Manage thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
- Live a balanced life
Whether you are seeking a course of recovery for yourself or have been mandated to attend a recovery program, SMART Recovery provides a path to life beyond addiction.
