BSH Meetup subscribers,
Baltimore Secular Humanists is a chapter of the Washington Area Secular Humanists (WASH, www.wash.org), a regional secular humanist group in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia areas. I'm taking this opportunity to ask people on the meetup list to join WASH.
WASH has 10 local chapters (home.wash.org/chapters/). WASH is a membership organization for all the chapters, and it is supported entirely by membership dues and donations. All expenses of the 10 local chapters are paid by WASH, including meetup fees ($144/year), printing, and publicity. WASH publishes a monthly newsletter, WASHline, that lists events of the chapters, as well as articles and reviews written by members on subjects related to humanism, science, and current events. WASH depends on members to support these efforts.
There is a more important reason to join WASH, though. If you consider yourself to be a secular humanist, atheist, or freethinker, you should make your position known by supporting a local humanist group. We try to get humanists together in meetings to get to know each other. We hope to educate the public that humanists are ethical and can live good lives without supernatural beliefs. The more members we have, the more we can influence cultural discussions.
WASH is also affiliated with four national organizations: the Center for Inquiry (www.centerforinquiry.net), American Humanist Association (americanhumanist.org), Atheist Alliance of America (atheistallianceamerica.org), and American Atheists (atheists.org). We are also an endorsing organization of the Secular Coalition of America (secular.org), a lobbying organization that influences laws and regulations.
You can join WASH through the website, (home.wash.org/join-wash), and paying through PayPal. WASH is a 501(c)3 organization registered in the state of Maryland, so donations are tax deductible. If you are already a WASH member, thanks for your support!
