About us

Meet other local Humanists, people who believe in the basic goodness of the human spirit without supernaturalism.

The Washington Area Secular Humanists (WASH) was incorporated in 1989 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational organization in Maryland. Our purpose is to promote scientific literacy and critical thinking, to provide a forum for humanists and others to explore humanist principles and how they relate to all aspects of human experience, and to study the significance of humanism throughout history. Secular humanists are distinguished by an emphasis on scientific methods of knowing, separation of church and state, and a commitment to the pursuit of humanist goals outside religious frameworks.

WASH has several active Chapters from Roanoke, VA to Baltimore, MD.

WASH is an independently incorporated non-profit organization and also a chapter of the American Humanist Association and an affiliate of American Atheists.

Join Congressman Jared Huffman, founder of the Congressional Freethought Caucus, for a timely conversation on his new book, No Prophets: Saving Democracy from Christian Nationalism, featuring AU Humanist Community Leader Miranda Hovemeyer and moderated by Rev. Eric Doolittle, University Chaplain and Director of Kay Spiritual Life Center.

Copies of the book will be sold at the event, and Congressman Huffman will be available to sign them. This program is open to all and welcomes participation regardless of race, color, national origin (or shared ancestry), religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status.

From Congressman Jared Huffman, a behind-the-scenes look at the shocking extent of Christian nationalism’s reach in our government—and the fight to defend church-state separation.
Sinclair Lewis is said to have warned: “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross.” On January 6, 2021, Rep. Jared Huffman saw something chillingly close to that vision. Thousands of Christians following self-declared prophets stormed the Capitol. The insurrection should have been a national wake-up call about Christian nationalism. Instead, most Americans and politicians looked away.

No Prophets argues that Christian nationalism is now America’s most dangerous political movement. Huffman pulls back the curtain on religious extremists behind the insurrection who have only grown more powerful with Trump’s return. Openly vowing to destroy church-state separation and democracy as we know it, they now work inside the highest levels of government to drive domestic and foreign policy, reshape federal agencies, undermine science and education, and tilt elections. The endgame: an authoritarian theocracy that imposes their religious beliefs by force of law.
