HELLO HASD, unfortuantely, the invocation was rescheduled for February 17th due to special circumstances, but we have some great things going on:
This December's HASD meeting will be Sunday the 21st at 1 pm
This is our year end celebration!
We will present a photographic retrospect of our great 2008 year, let you guys know what's happening for 2009, hold an election for next year's Board of Directors bringing back some familiar faces and some new friends, Honoring the Humanist of the Year, and there might even be an appearance from the Magical Santa Claus!
This is a family friendly event, and catered in an all green and eco friendly way, with a delicious meal. This event is potluck, so bring your favorite dish, sweet or treat.
This is our annual membership drive kickoff. So it's time to pay dues. only $30 a year (or $20 student, sr., mil, low income) We are trying to raise $3,000 for 2009 to put on a February Production of Inherit the Wind for Darwin's 200th Birthday, Have a strong presence at Earth Day, Put on a larger San Diego Pride Event, and Produce HASD's new religious commentary play in November '09. It also pays for our Meetup, printing costs for flyers and agendas, food and refreshments, maintain our weekly coffee and conversation, and finally launch our San Diego Secular Singers Humanist Chorus.
Your contribution also sponsors a weekly meeting of the Secular Organization for Sobriety, Keeping a secular presence in San Diego, and our new community service projects including: Working with special delivery (an organization helping homebound AIDS patients), working with Dress for Success (helping lower income women enter the workforce), and doing a toiletry and food drive to help the local homeless population.
Next year's monthly meetings will be $3 suggested donation for non-members so get your membership today and save $6 a year!
This is going to be a great event! Bring your family, friends, and see you Sunday the 21st at 1 pm.Please RSVP so we know exactly how much food to have.
HERE's What Happened at the Board Meeting today:
we approved the minutes of the last meeting
The president's report said that things are going great, the treasurer told us that the treasury is a little low and needs more money.
This year we had a great time Whale Watching, received a $2000 AHA Chapter Assembly Grant, got an account on Meetup.com, held a terrific 17 hour Independence from Dogma day party, made our mark with the largest gay wedding in history at the San Diego Pride Parade, fought for the equality of marriage at several rallies, remembered the life of George Carlin, started a weekly Coffee and Conversation, a weekly meeting of the Secular Organization for Sobriety, began monthly power point lectures on current events including Intelligent Design and Marriage Equality, we went snorkeling, showed strong support at the annual Scouting for All rally in Balboa Park, went as a group to Religulous, showed our support at the first Humanist Invocation to the City of San Diego, had Jeff Archer talk about his new book "The Mother of All Battles", Celebrated our third annual thanksgiving party, increased our numbers three-fold and cut the average age in half as we entered the 21st century with a stronger presence on the net, we began to meet weekly, got politically active, and started community service projects.
We have chosen our humanist of the year, as well as four other who will be recognized for their contributions to the local freethought community on 12-21
We are hosting our annual membership meeting Sunday, December 21st at 1 pm at Joyce Beers, complete with catering, entertainment, and a welcome to 2009
In January our regular HASD meetings will now be the third Sundays 6 pm at Joyce Beers, with a $3 suggested donation for non-members: we are starting to charge, because we feel that what we do is worthwhile, and know that you do as well. We are entering into more community-wide projects this year and stepping outside of our small tight-nit community to help the general community of San Diego.
In 2009 we will be going for more hikes, another whale watch, participating in Earth Day and Scouting for All's 10th annual Rally, hold an event at Mt. Soledad to recognize the secular nature of our city, hosting a 2009 Human Lights Day Celebration, an event for the National Day of Reason, pushing for at January 2010 Humanist Regional Conference, and building more community. Other projects will include Brande's Health Challenge, a 200th Darwin Day Celebration production of Inherit the Wind, an original religious commentary play written by HASD members in November 2009, and monthly Op-Ed articles to the San Diego Union Tribune and other news outlets. In 2009 we will focus our efforts on promoting secular issues such as challenging the tax exempt status of Religious organizations who violate their IRS 501 (c) 3 tax exemption, working to bring Humanism into prisons and hospitals, working to help the victims of the Harris Fire, helping HIV patients and Low Income women, starting the San Diego Secular Singers, a possible re-establishment of our HASD Science Essay Contest, and do more grant writing.
