Amnesty International Film Screening: "Pink Saris"

Please join Amnesty International and the Association for India’s Development at a public screening of the film documentary Pink Saris, directed by Kim Longinotto, at the San Diego Central Library.  This event is free of charge.

Pink Saris chronicles the activities of a northern Indian women’s activist group, called the Gulabi Gang, as it fights on behalf of abused and abandoned girls and women while challenging entrenched attitudes and institutions that conspire to keep many Indian women powerless and vulnerable to violence and other abuses.

A discussion, led by SDSU anthropology and women’s studies professor Huma Gosh, will take place following the film screening.  Please contact Sophak Yem at [masked] for more information.

Optional dinner after the event

Please join us for an early dinner after the event at Maizbaan Pakistani Restaurant, 1010 Broadway (next to Broadway Pizza).  Click here for a recent article from the San Diego Reader on this new restaurant.

The film to me demonstrated what's keeping women down all over the world: religion. I really liked the statement of the main character at the beginning of the film: "To hell with gods." If all women thought as she did, religious institutions all over the world would shake in their boots. Dinner afterwards was fun and the Pakistani food was delicious. I am glad that this is our very last Meet-up in the sorry 2nd floor meeting room at the Central Library. That is the crappiest venue we have ever used. Good riddance!

Will there be enough seating if I wish to bring a guest?

O.K, Jim. I just changed the announcement to reflect that we will have an early dinner at Maizbaan Pakistani Restaurant after the event.

I will probably not be able to come to Cafe Lulu, because I will have to start setting up at 1:30 or so.
However, for those who may be interested, there is a pretty good Indian restaurant about two blocks from the library. We can go out to dinner afterwards.
