Portland, OR 97210From Dark to Light - a Celebration of the Winter Solstice for area Freethinkers.
Been looking for a chance to wear your holiday finery? We have an invitation for you!As the light fades
, leading up to the longest night of the year, please gather your friends and families and join the Humanists of Greater Portland and the Center for Inquiry Portland, your hosts, for the first annual Portland area freethought Winter Solstice party in NW Portland, from 6-9 PM. We will decorate a Solstice Tree - the Tree of Knowledge -
with little books, humanist sayings, musical instruments and musical notes, etc. Please bring something to go on the tree that represents the advance of science, the arts, and human understanding of our place in the Universe -- use your imagination! Our Master of Ceremonies
will be Fred Strong, local entertainment entrepreneur, directing musical performances by some of our talented friends. There will be the singing of solstice "carols," karaoke (maybe some dancing!) and special entertainment for the children.
Befitting a secular holiday, the kids will be wowed by Winter Solstice stories and fables from gifted storyteller, jolly ol' Dave Powell of the Rose City Astronomers, who will be dressed in a red, medieval, astronomer's costume
.This is a "formal" potluck,
so look up your your favorite holiday recipe that can feed 4-6 people - and don't forget the serving spoon. Tableware will be provided by HGP. We will have soda, wine and beer on hand, but you may wish to bring more of your favorite beverages.
The Portland area freethought community is doing something a little different for Winter Solstice
this year -- so everyone who is anyone will want to be there!
