Take care,What is CoderDojo? It is open, free, learning -- for kids to learn how to code.Hello Hudson Valley Web Design Group!Lately, I've been spending at least 1 or 2 long weekends up there a month, and I'd like to give back to the community I came from by helping start a chapter of the awesome CoderDojo movement up there. I'd love any possible help getting it off the ground.
My name is Josh Gough. I'm based in Atlanta now, but I was born in Poughkeepsie and grew up in Wappingers Falls and Dutchess County.
See http://www.coderdojo.com for full details. In brief:
It's a way for parents to bring their kids, ages 7 - 17, to a FREE, open, fun, supportive place so the kids can learn how to code! The kids are supported by professional programmers who serve as mentors. Parents bring their own laptops for their children to use.
It's very important to understand that it's always free for parents and their kids to attend a CoderDojo. It is not a business like a "code camp" or anything commercial like that. It's purely volunteer based and thrives on the spirit of volunteerism and generosity.
The movement has grown from one dojo in Ireland in 2011 to more than 200 now! They're in NYC, LA, Munich, Cape Town, Dublin, Okinawa, San Fran, everywhere...The company I work for in Atlanta, VersionOne, is sponsoring a brand new one here by donating space and laptops. See this YouTube promo I made to understand more about the basic idea:
