    Web streaming? At https://join.me/XivelyIoT

    3 · February 18, 2014

    • Andy P.

We don't need a bigger meetup space but we would like people who register to actually show up - only about 60 last night - a bigger space would only make us rattle around more! The streaming is a new feature, this was our second attempt at trying it, we will try to publicise it better as we go forward.

    • David B.

Does that mean we can turn up if we are on the wait list?

      March 25, 2014

  • Pete S.

This blog post suggests only charging people who don't turn up. http://www.eventmanagerblog.com/avoid-no-shows I'm not sure of the legality.

  • Paul R.

Any chance there might be a recording of last nights meetup? Also just joined the waiting list for the next meetup number on that waiting list already at 105, more opportunity of getting to the event would be good, with earlier notifications of available space so that there isn't clashes with other meetups going on on the same night.

    February 19, 2014

  • Andy P.

Thanks to everyone who came, and I hope those who joined the stream found it useful. I had fun being the "substitute Alex" for the evening and hosting! :-)

    February 19, 2014

  • Andy P.

Headcount was around 60 last night.

Needing a larger venue? We're moving into a new space in Feb - maybe an option. Let me know if you would like me to look into it.

Can I just turn up then even though I'm on the wait list if so many are going to drop out?

      February 18, 2014

    • Peter N.

Respect to any meetup that gets oversubscribed as fast, but as Brian asked, if drop off rates are high, what's the chance I can I just turn up and get in? I got to place 103 on the waitlist less than 16 hours after the next meetup was announced. Maybe a 50p charge would cut the drop-off rate - I'd happily pay and I'd turn up, too!

      February 19, 2014

  • Boris A.

Almost a bit trivial tonight, but, hey, there's got to be something for every one.

    February 18, 2014

  • Scott W.

Can we check how Alex is by seeing how active her kettle is? Len? ;)

Like others, got off the waitlist too late and won't be able to make it :(

    February 18, 2014

  • Cigdem S.

Saw it too late that I made it to the list. Hate missing it!

    February 18, 2014

  • Dan F.

Won't be able to come. One day soon....

    February 18, 2014

  • Andrew L.

Sorry, received my promotion from waiting list too late to make it. Hope the next person can use it...

    February 18, 2014

  • rob w.

Sadly have just had to cancel. Have changed my RSVP. Next on waiting list please enjoy!

    February 18, 2014

  • Paul R.

Is there a current status on the waiting list, really wouldn't want to miss this.

    February 17, 2014

  • Emanuele P.

    I am sorry I can't attend. I've changed my RSVP...enjoy guys!!!

    February 18, 2014

  • Frode S.

Can we meet up and see if there is some free space?

    February 18, 2014

  • David M.

I'm no longer able to attend tonight, so I've changed my RSVP. I hope you have a great night!

    February 18, 2014

  • Werner K.

Will be at SMWHH that day. As mentioned, it would be awesome if a May IoT MeetUp would correlate with the JCP EC F2F in London ;-)

    1 · February 12, 2014

    • Werner K.

Glad you like it, I pointed the Spec Leas of Java ME 8 Embedded to the MeetUp and we shall discuss possible synergies with the EC F2F if there was interest from its host, too.

      February 17, 2014

  • Hammad S.

Please tell, if these meet up talks recorded for those not able to attend.

    February 17, 2014

    • Andy P.

last time it was streamed. Watch this space.

      1 · February 17, 2014

  • Ian C.

Unfortunately I can't make it anymore, but I have just changed my RSVP status, so some other lucky person can go.

    February 17, 2014

  • Paul T.

Alex, as I think you know, several growing meetups have moved to Shoreditch Village Hall. At least there you would not have the problem of people being able to see the screen. The question is whether @monkchips generosity is still holding out. Capacity limit will, of course, still apply.

    1 · January 28, 2014

    • Alexandra D.

I know, but our sponsor Xively still wants to keep it in the office. Will talk to them.

Any chances there will be spaces for this meetup?

The last meeting re-arranged the room. It seemed full and, with everybody standing, many people at the back had difficulty viewing. Many more and it would be impossible. Xively must be thanked for their tolerance of the disruption to their work space.

    1 · January 28, 2014

  • Andy P.

We had space last night - Alex can only advertise the space at capacity, and there were many no-shows (again) - not sure a bigger venue will help :-/

    2 · January 22, 2014

    • Jiri J.

Hi Alexandra :-) Yes, the number of people that doesn't turn up is high. What we started doing is that a couple of days before the event, we flush all social media (+ we send Meetup email update, too) and we say: who's not coming please update the status! I acknowledge that The Research Thing is not such a high-profile event as IoT London, but we managed to decrease the drop-off rate down to 10 percent. Good luck!

      1 · January 24, 2014

    • Alexandra D.

Will try bullying people..see what happens :)

      2 · January 27, 2014

  • Mark L.

Why not try to charge £1-10. Not much but just enough for someone to actually do something other than RSVP YES as soon as the email comes in and forget about it. Give the money to charity if you don;t feel comfortable keeping it. If people won't pay a £1 to attend, they probably shouldn't be there anyways.

    1 · January 22, 2014

    • Mark L.

Hey! Happy New Year. Long due a catch up. The last thing I want you to be doing is micromanaging anything, your time is too important - that was why if you asked for even a micropayment, you would get commitment and then not have to flush social media, ask people to amend their statuses etc but I am just offering another though. Will call you next week if you are around?

      January 24, 2014

    • Alexandra D.

Am always around in one form or another :)

Is it OK to come to the Drinks, if there's no room for the lecturers?

    1 · January 22, 2014

    • Alexandra D.

Yes of course, although you can come along and see if there's space...there usually is.

      1 · January 23, 2014

  • keith w.

need a larger venue, upto 250? I could get you Level39, Canary Wharf.

    1 · January 22, 2014

    • Mark L.

Though if you don't charge people to attend, there is less commitment to do so and you then throw another obstacle in the way - Canary Wharf is further away so you will get more drop off.

      January 22, 2014

    • Alexandra D.

We've tried hosting a bigger meetup and the mood really changes, it's not the same and people don't network as much...capacity isn't the issues, no-shows are and sadly not much we can do about that!

      January 23, 2014

  • Ian C.

I was on the wait list for the event two days ago, but never made it off that and so didn't turn up on the off-chance. So it is a bit annoying if people on the list actually didn't turn up, and didn't take themselves off the list. This time, I struck quickly and am on the list for next month's meeting. I promise I will take myself off if I cannot attend! I think the Meetup engine should demand a re-affirmation the day before, to try to make sure people really will turn up?

    January 23, 2014

    • Robert B.

Much the same but didn't make it onto the list this time either. Based on the comments below I think I'll just show up and hope there is capacity.

      January 23, 2014

  • adrian

.. , before your calendar is settled.

    January 22, 2014

  • adrian

The relatively small capacity together with free attendance tends to encourage no-shows : it's an advantage to sign up as quickly as possible, before .

The problem is persuading people to bother changing their RSVP. I don't know that Meetup supports it, but requiring a confirmation in the last couple of days might help.

    January 22, 2014

  • Anubhav G.

It's great to see such excitement about the event, but I do agree we need a bigger venue - this meetup went into wait-list just within an hour..
