Five minute lightning talks!

As is the jQuery Boston Meetup Tradition (TM), instead of one speaker getting up and talking for an hour, we want you, jQuery Boston Meetup members, to each get up and talk for five minutes. If you've been working on a really cool project, have a new jQuery plugin, figured our how to do something nobody else knows how to do, or just want to talk about JavaScript syntax for five minutes, tell us all about it!

Please, only JavaScript- or jQuery-related talks!

Everyone is invited to talk, just RSVP with your talk idea if you're interested. Feel free to post and discuss five minute talk topics in the comments. We'll have 7 slots in which people can speak.

So far, we have these talks scheduled:

  • Ben Alman - TBD
  • Liam Morley - Upgrading a Rails 2/legacy jQuery app to a Rails 3/Backbone.js/Twitter Bootstrap app
  • Kirk Israel - Low lag HTML5 audio best practices
  • Andrew Bialecki - Bootstrapping pages via the HTML5/jQuery "data" attribute
  • Open slot!

Talks will get underway at 6:45pm, so don't be late!

Our meetup's pizza and beer are generously sponsored by Media Temple -- check them out for Linux web hosting services!

    Hello, everyone.

I just wanted let you know that I will be presenting about TypeScript on Thursday, January 10th, 2013 at the Bocoup Loft.

For those who don't know, TypeScript is a language designed and developed by Microsoft (with Anders Hejlsberg being the Lead Architect). It is a super-set of ECMAScript version 5 (also known as JavaScript). JavaScript lacks many of the language features that are taken for granted in other programming languages, such as C, C++, C#, Java, et cetera. Simply put, TypeScript aims at fixing this problem by extending JavaScript in a way that allows developers to build powerful applications using the JavaScript they love, but with the added typing, built-in module systems, error-checking, and strong tooling.

To learn more about TypeScript, visit: http://typescriptlang.org.
The event can be found here: http://bit.ly/12CXq3o.

    Thanks!

Very interesting to hear what the jQuery foundation is planning. It's a nice change of pace from code-code-code. It was also quite entertaining to see Ben abuse JS functions with his abstraction js talk.

Had to leave midway through, but the first three presentations were all very interesting (and in some cases really entertaining!) Lots of concepts I can take away and apply to my own projects.

Hey, Is there anyone on the list with iOS 6 Dev version on a device, and is willing to run a quick test for my presentation (viewing a page, clicking a few buttons, describing the results...) Contact me at kirkjerk at gmail -- thanks!

Hey, if there's interest, I can talk for 5 minutes on a technique I use for bootstrapping pages via the HTML5/jQuery "data" attribute. I'm mostly interested in presenting one way to do it and then later (hopefully over beers) hearing how others do it.

Sounds great, Andrew. I've added you to the list!

Scratch that, I think I can have a more interesting and useful talk on low lag HTML5 audio best practices

      Ok, I added you!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
