So upset I couldn't make it, especially since a close relative is an Arabic specialist in the Navy, studied the Somali dialect, and is now doing intelligence on pirates from a submarine. Feeling anxiety for him! Would have loved to hear and participate in the discussion. Was there a consensus that the movie was sympathetic toward the pirates? I felt it was complex, showed the beginnings of a reluctant connection between Capt. Phillips and the Somali captain, and it didn't offer easy answers.

Besides the island of Madagascar, Somalia has THE MOST COASTLINE OF AFRICA. But it is in a most TERRIBLE FAMINE! Somalia Pirates Are Merely Resisting Toxic Nuclear Wastes Dumping And Over Fishing ( - without tariff or tax and regulations - like the prized Yellow-fin Tuna and Rock Lobsters): Since the collapse of Somalia's government in 1991, (and > 20 yrs. civil wars) ....governments and corporations have been doing brisk business amidst and despite the chaos. (They...) have taken full advantage of the lack of oversight, and many have greatly profited from sale of weapons there, as well as using the country as a dumping ground. The secret was uncovered after the 2004 tsunami, but has barely received coverage in the media. … it is the way the world works!

I had sincerely hoped that folks would all walk away from the film - thinking, "we really need to protect Somalia from illegal over-fishing and waste dumping of their coastline by the richer nations of the world, but the film basically just waves the red white and blue - and hides the dirty truths under a good guys VS bad guys shoot 'em up drama. Here is a SUPERB documentary which shoes that U.S. Democracy was absurdly demolished in the past decade: Murder, Spies & Voting Lies: The Clint Curtis Story... The true story of computer programmer Clint Curtis who, in 2000, claims he was asked by future Congressman Tom Feeney (R,Fl.) to create vote-rigging ... I'm buying a bunch of these!!
