MaRandy's Games! or, Intro to Board Game Geek

Hi, Fellow Gamers!

The purpose of this page is to partially to share which games Randy and I own so that you can learn more about some of the game titles you'll likely see at a Game Meetup. The other purpose is to share a useful game-researching tool with you, my fellow gamer, if you are ever interested.

(Check out and look up user NiesseBarlow to see Randy's and my games.)

I finally staked out some time to log each of Randy's and my games onto, a handy dandy Web site dedicated to virtually nothing but games!! (Video and role-playing games are included too, but because we're primarily a board gaming group, I'll focus on that.)

Boardgamegeek does a lot more than just let you see people's collections. Without the requirement of "joining" the site, boardgamegeek lets you research further any game titles you might have seen or heard about at meetups. You can even look into trading with or buying games from other people on the site if you like.

When you search for a game and click on a game title, you'll see a bunch of data pop up, including a view of the game in the box (to be sure it's the one you're interested in). All of this data could be very interesting, but one of my favorite things is the different types of Ratings that the particular game has received from people who have played it like you and me. There's a Geek Rating, an Average Rating, a Board Game Rank, a Strategy Game Rank and a Family Game Rank. Most of these are based on what fellow Web users have thought about the game and submitted to the site. There is also a Recommendations tab or section, where you can look up games with similar mechanics, themes, etc.

So look up some games and have fun! Explore the kinds of games you like best, or the types of game mechanics you prefer. For example, I like games that offer a certain number and variety of choices each turn, with short- and long-term benefits to each so that the winner is the player who balances both of these the best. But you might prefer dice games, or Rummy-style card games, or bidding games.

Happy browsing and happy gaming!
