I've been working as Mads Tolling's Personal Manager for a little over one year and have so many amazing stories to share with the Danish community. Here are some highlights:
~Mads Tolling began playing the violin at age 6. He and his younger sister would often play for money in the streets of Copenhagen. At age 10, Mads was invited to play before the then Prime Minister Poul Schluter, the US Ambassador and members of the Danish Parliament.
~He was selected for the Conservatory in Denmark but instead decided to move to the US and study at Berklee College of Music where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2003.
~At the suggestion of Jean-Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke hired Mads to join his band, and Mads toured worldwide with the Stanley Clarke Band since summer 2003.
~In the fall of 2003, Mads was accepted for a full scholarship at Thelonius Monk Institute. During his first semester, Turtle Island String Quartet contacted Mads to audition as a violist. Mads did not know how to play the viola, accepted the invitation, and studied like a madman for the next few weeks. He got the gig with Turtle Island, has been a member since, and garnered two Grammy Awards (2006, 2008): http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/02/...![]()
~On Oct 20, 2009, Mads Tolling released his sophomore CD "The Playmaker" (Madsman Records/City Hall), and it is #29 on the jazz charts. ~There is no major label support here. This is a grassroots movement. "It is my goal with this album to highlight the link between music and sports, athletes and musicians, two worlds that are not often compared. However, the basic qualities are so similar - it's all about team work!" (Mads Tolling). Tue, Jan 26 @ Blues - Alley Washington, D.C.
As Mads Tolling's solo project tours nationally and internationally, we hope to build support, especially within the Danish community. Meetups will be arranged so that you can not only connect one on one with Mads Tolling but also have the opportunity to win free tickets, CDs, etc.
