Getting Started with Joomla Extension Development - Intro to PHP with Mike Pearl

Extension development is not as daunting as you might imagine! You already have a good working knowledge of Joomla and html, you've grabbed extensions for JED but when the extension doesn't do exactly what you want, or there's no extension to meet your need what do you do? Hire a developer to write an extension for you? Don't be silly, extending Joomla is much easier than you think.

Before we show you how to write a world class template, create your own plugin or module, you need to get a basic working knowledge of PHP. That's just what you'll walk away from this session with... In fact, you'll have all the tools needed to start really exploiting Joomla for all it's worth. At this meetup, Mike Pearl, Joomla Extension Developer, will present an introduction to PHP with an eye to extension development

You will:

Set up a fully functioning development and test environment on your laptop ... don't forget to bring your laptop to the meetup! Write and run your first PHP script With hand's on exercises, you'll learn the basics of PHP and "Object Oriented Programming" Walk away confident that you have all the tools needed to start writing your scripts - and ready for upcoming sessions on extension development Prerequisites prior to the meetup (meaning do them before you arrive at the meetup):

Have a basic, working knowledge of html and css Your laptop with you ready to use Have Oracle's FREE VirtualBox (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html) installed on your laptop Have Basewind's FREE Joomla Developers Workstation (http://www.basewind.com/extensions/joomla-developer-vm) (the top link 4.30 single file) - if you're daring, import it into VirtualBox Find instructions for importing the Joomla Developers Workstation into VirtualBox at the bottom of the page at http://www.basewind.com/extensions/joomla-developer-vm This is a hands-on meetup specifically towards the goal of extension development with the first step being to achieve basic PHP knowledge that can be built upon. While this meetup is appropriate for beginners when it comes to code, it is not a meetup to discuss using Joomla from the perspective of a user. It is geared toward webmasters, administrators, designers and integrators with an interest in extension development but with little or no experience.

Many of you have asked for this, so come and participate in Intro to PHP with excellent teacher Mike! AND some food will be served at this meetup as well so we don't have to learn on an empty stomach.
