Multiple domains from the same backend?

Hi. I have a non-profit client that is preparing to unify their small galaxy of existing sites under a common CMS. They want a one-stop-shop to manage content on multiple domains, and to run reports across all of the data shared among them. There will be sites with user log-ins, public sites, an e-commerce site, and more. Admins will one one log-in that will grant them access to their tools.

My question is, can all of this be done with a single Joomla backend? Can Joomla be configured to behave differently based on the requested site name (vhost)?

Thanks in advance.

There is a way to do that, but it's not exactly straight forward. I looked into it awhile back and figured out that it can be done, but I can't remember exactly how I figured it all out. And that was Joomla 1.5 era. It looks like 2.5 and 3.0 would be more capable of that based upon styles configuration. I think there are discussions on that topic in the Joomla forums that might help.
