Pittsburgh Kayakers Pages

Our Meetup is a friendly group of Kayakers who love to paddle around Western Pennsylvania. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience or equipment.

The trip leaders are all knowledgeable volunteers who are passionate about kayaking and like to share that passion with others. Please be understanding when things don't work out as planned, and please be appreciative of the time and effort they put into planning and leading the trips.

An important note about safety - you are responsible for your own safety during our events. Of course, others will help you if you get into trouble, but you should strive to be prepared. We have one iron-clad rule - during our trips, YOU MUST WEAR A PFD AT ALL TIMES! You can learn about paddling skills, gear and safety a number of different ways - get online, get a book, take a class, and talk to more experienced members. Everyone will be happy to answer your questions, and will appreciate your desire to learn more.

We highly recommend getting some professional training, and we'll be posting training events throughout the year. Please don't assume that you'll never go in the water. It can happen to anyone. Ideally, everyone should have experience with wet exits. What's a wet exit? Nothing more than flipping your boat over in a class and learning to deal with the aftermath. Why is this important? First, without training, it is much harder than you think to get back in your boat or to make it to shore. And second, with training, you will be unlikely to panic if it happens to you on a trip. Panicked paddlers not only put themselves at risk, but are a real hazard to those who try to help them!

Western Pennsylvania is fast developing into a hotbed of outdoor activities, and this group is developing just as fast. With hundreds of miles of rivers and many lakes, the possibilities are endless - from beginner paddles to hard-core trips, exploring new locations, overnights, urban and backcountry paddles, picnics, ??? Here's hoping that you come out with us to make some new friends, get some exercise, learn, and explore!
