A Trip of Great Taste

I'm planning a "Trip of Great Taste" for Saturday, June 7th, 2014.  Overnight camping at my place is suggested after the paddle on Saturday.  In the evening, I'll build a fire in the "fire ring".   Please bring a chair to sit on around the fire.  The garage has a full kitchen, and bath facilities.  The shower upstairs is available for anyone who wants to freshen up, but please bring you're own towels and personal items.  I'll also be doing a supplementry paddle on Sunday, June 8th, if anyone is interested in doing that one to.  For those who are camping out, we can do breakfast at the Creekside Restaurant across the river from Apollo.    This will be a 12 mile paddle on the Kiski River from Saltsburg to my place near Apollo.  The Kiski is a docile, class I river, with a couple of short stretches of 100 yards or less of extremely mild class II "Fun Foam".   After the paddle on Saturday, I'll fire up the grill and make burgers for the group.  If you like, fell free to bring something to share, chips, snaks, etc.

We will meet at my place at 9:30am on Saturday, set up a shuttle and proceed to the put in at Saltsburg.  At the 4 mile mark, well stop at Avonmore for lunch.  Please pack a lunch.  There is a pavilon and porta potty there.  We'll then proceed another 4 miles to Copper Head Cove where we will stop for a swim break.  From there, I'll proceed ahead of the group for about 200 yards to check the river for any wild beast that may be lurking in the water.  Jeff will take the group from Copper Head Cove to the meeting point where I will rejoin the group with "the barge".   After joining the group, and enjoying some leisure float time on the water, we will proceed to the take out at my place.

Upon taking out, and retrieving the shuttle vehicles, we can enjoy the evening eating, and sitting around the fire sharing tales of incredible feats.

Steve, what time are you doing the paddle on Sunday (6-8)? Will it be the same as the Saturday paddle or shorter? Thanks.

    Carl,
I think I understand. I didn't set a max number of people to attend, but a max number of guests may be in the system somewhere. I'll have to check it more closely next time.

2 guests is the default setting. You need to click on edit for this event then scroll down and edit the RSVP settings. Type in whatever number you want for number of guests allowed for this event.

As of this time, I have 10 additional people comming to this meetup. I don't know why, but I can only add 2 people as guests. So I added 2 guests, and I have 10 additional people comming besides my guests..

Do you have a max number of people allowed? Check to see if there is a limit set, even if you don't remember setting one this time around.

    Cindy,
Ther is no set time as to when we will be getting off the river. In the past, due to the festivities on the river, we have usually gotten off by 5pm, but don't hold me to it.

Steve, I'm sorry ...I do have to cancel. I'm hoping to be able to make the next one. Thanks for everything!

Steve, I was wondering how long we expect to be on the river and getting back to your place? I have to coordinate a "carshare" with my daughter, so if you can give me an estimated time that would be great!

... I'm still looking for my "good deal" on a kayak ... I'm hopeful, but as with any purchase, I'm slow to decide :) ... I would love to pick one up at an estate sale ... but haven't seen any yet at even garage sales ... I won't be kayaking this year until I have my own float ... if anyone sees something, I'd appreciate you dropping me a line at [masked] ... it doesn't have to be pretty, at all, but I'd like a smaller touring kayak primarily because it seems to me to require less physical strength to maneuver on the water and it's relatively light to carry ... obviously, the drier it stays the better! ... thanks!

River's Edge has a couple of used yaks @ $200, green color. Also orange and blue in a range going from "used" to "well-used" to patched. I didn't have much time to look today, might be going back for a second look.

      June 2, 2014

  • Steve

    Kelly,

Steve - the "Stonycreek Kiski-Conemaugh Sojourn" is paddling from the Conemaugh Dam to Avonmore on Saturday - maybe the groups will run into each other on the river!
