Wednesday Night Paddle

RATING - Beginner SK2 (click on link to see rating info), Night Trip, approx 5-8 miles, Medium Speed

This trip tends to have flat water, currents up to about 2MPH under some bridges, and can sometimes have brisk winds, though we usually pick a sheltered route on windy nights.

LOCATION & DESCRIPTION - This trip launches from George English Park (the park at the corner of Sunrise and Bayview Drive, across from the Galleria) and has about a dozen possible routes depending on wind and current. This trip can be as long (or short) as we feel like making it! Snacks/dinner afterwards sometimes, location TBD.

LAUNCHES - There are two launch points in this park, a very nice sand beach right at the corner of Sunrise Blvd and the Middle River (but don't park there), and a flat rocky beach near the Tennis Center toward the north side of the park. Regulars usually launch from the Tennis Center.

KAYAK RENTALS - Kayak rentals are not available for this trip.

PARKING - FREE at the Tennis Center launch - don't park in the metered area, there are occasionally break-ins over there.

GEAR - BASICS plus NIGHT TIME GEAR. Please visit the GEAR page link for specifics!

Looking at the track from last night it looks like we could have continued under the Andrews ave. bridge and looped around coming back to New River and it would have only added just over a mile to the trip.

    Something for next time maybe,

A wonderful trip! We had guests in from out of town, and it was a pleasure having them along! A reasonably brisk pace was set as we did the usual Downtown run, with a side-trip up the Tarpon River to Las Olas. The turnaround point was the set of floating docks at the Performing Arts Center (Phil wanted to scout docking for the upcoming Jazz Brunch trip), and on the way back we got to play with the Jungle Queen a bit. Altogether a great night!

Last night's paddle was great, all the way up New River to the Bwd Theatre of Performing Arts. We all had a hoot with the Jungle Queen waiting for the railroad trestle to open as we navigated beneath. I was especially amused when the JQ overtook me and the captain advised " ahoy, you in the kayak, please stay close to the seawall, we're passing by now". That's about as close to my 15 minutes of fame as I will ever get ! The passengers all waved at me as the boat blew past. A great evening for all present.

Margie may have to work Wed night but I will be there. We both have new Wilderness Systems Pongo 140s so now we can keep up withe the sit ins. Our old sit on tops were painfully slow !
