New Meetup: Thursday Night Kayaking & Canoe Training - Wingra Dam Portage #28

Announcing a new Meetup for Madison Kayaking Meetup Group!

What: Thursday Night Kayaking & Canoe Training - Wingra Dam Portage #28

When: Thursday, May 20,[masked]:30 PM

Where:
Wingra Dam Portage/Vilas Park - #28
702 South Randall Avenue Southern end of Vilas Zoo
Madison, WI 53715

For 2010 we have established Thursday Night Kayaking & Canoe Training events. Every Thursday night we will be putting in at various parks around the Madison area. We will paddle up to couple of hours and then break. Events are for beginners and intermediate skilled paddlers, giving you an opportunity to strengthen your skills for longer events that normally take place on weekends. I?ve found good maps of the waterways in and around Madison. And, I?ll be referring to launching points based on these maps. The maps are found at (http://www.capitolwatertrails.org/maps/AllMaps.pdf) I personally have not been to most of these locations but will scout them prior to scheduling. If you have a favorite spot, give me a call or e-mail. Our first concern for Thursday night is safety (calm water/low wind), ease of access, and a scenic area. We want to be on the water for about 1-2 hours.

This weeks event will launch at Wingra Dam Portage/Wingra Creek, point #28 on the capitol water trails map (http://www.capitolwatertrails.org/maps/AllMaps.pdf), and exit at point #25, Olin-Turville Canoe Launch (where the Wingra Creek merges with Lake Mendota). This route is about one mile, scenic, and, for the more adventurous/stronger paddlers, time on Lake Mendota is a must.

This agenda meets our Thursday night criteria, and will give us experience on a lightly traveled (and very safe) creek and lake paddling. The only portage involved is from the parking lot to Wingra Creek. Weaker paddlers should exit early at Olin-Turville Park, Stronger paddlers should stay out longer and paddle Lake Mendota. The park facilities are excellent. If it is a nice night we can stay until dusk or longer.

Shuttle Service: My plans are to drop off boats at point #28 (the dam area at Vilas Zoo) at 6:00pm and drive vehicles over to Olin-Turville Park. Then return by car point #28 by 6:30pm. We'll have someone available to watch over the boats at point #28 while moving our vehicles to Olin-Turville Park. We should easily be able to get this event in by dusk. Madison Police patrol both areas regularly so your vehicle is safe. The launch point at Wingra Dam/Vilas Park is a grassy bank. The exit point at Olin-Turville Park is a very modern canoe & boat launch launch. If poor weather is forecasted, I?ll post a cancellation notice at 5:00pm on Thursday. Excellent weather updates can be found here http://www.weather.com/weather/map/interactive/USWI0411

Please remember to bring an extra set of clothes, gloves, hat, shoes, life vest, eye wear, flashlight, fluids, snacks, and any other safety equipment needed. Put your phone and camera in a watertight bags as they don?t work well when wet. I?ll have a phone along for safety purposes. Please let me know if you cannot swim or are a poor swimmer or have any physical handicaps. Well-behaved children are welcome. The landing does not have a bathroom.

There are no rentals. It's warming up, remember your fluids. We can stay out to dusk.
