Madison Kayak Meetup Ideas for 2010:
Thank you for being a member of the Kayak Meetup group! I am new to organizing this group and also new to kayaking. I plan to work with the folks at Rutabaga, who help support this group financially, physically, mentally (for me) and in spirit. If you are new or seasoned with kayaking or just want to share your love for the water and want to meet a group of folks that are fun and laid back, then this is the group for you.
All of the following ideas were born at the last meetup this past December, which was held at Rutabaga. Megan, Scott H. (from Rutabaga) and I represented our group and we came up with some exciting ideas for the year. Scott is excited to be part of our group and is going to help out with some of the instructional group meetups. If you are someone with experience or know someone with experience in any of the instructional meetup ideas, then let me know.
Please review the following meetup ideas and send me some feed back! I would like to know if you are very interested or not so interested in the list of ideas. I would also like to know if you would be willing to be an assistant and help organize any of the events. Our group will be as strong as you make it through your voice, efforts and willingness to participate at the events. Please continue this idea link by posting your comments, additional ideas or other information you want to share by the end of this month. I will then work on scheduling the events on the calendar for the year.
Planning group trips and shuttle runs ? learn how to lead a group, organize it and the responsibilities of group leading. This could be part of Packing for Kayak Trips ? Daytime and Overnight ? This can be a refresher course or new information for the new paddler. What to bring and how to pack your kayak.
Kayaking and Camping ? For the beginner and novice as well. This will cover the basic tips for camping and kayaking -- Scott has the experience and will give us great information!
First Aid/Safety ? on the water and off the water ? We can never know enough about first aid and safety. If you know CPR, or know someone who is experienced and is certified to teach, please let me know.
Kayaking in all kinds of weather conditions? This could be an extension of the Safety meetup. Some folks want to learn how to kayak in cooler weather? or what if you get caught in a rain storm?
Kayak Maintenance/Repair ? Unfortunately, accidents do happen with our boats and we may need to have it repaired. This will be an event to show you how a repair is done and how to maintain your kayak. What about winterizing my kayak?
Kayak Demo Day at Rutabaga ? This is your chance to try any kind of boat that Rutabaga has to offer! We will have a Friday eve or Sunday afternoon playing and learning about all different kinds of kayaks.
Kayaking and Fishing ? Scott?s specialty! He is willing to share his secrets with those of you who are interested in this sport!
Volunteer / Community Meetups
Two of these have been suggested. Suggest some more!
Canoecopia Meetup: We could have a meetup for the Canoecopia event that is held in March. Any volunteers for this event will be given a discount off their entry fee (50%). It would be a fun opportunity to give back to Rutabaga and to meet some people.
Clean up the waterways: in April with Capital City Waterways and then do it again in mid summer!
Instructional River (moving water) Meetups
This would be a series of 3 - 4 meetups that would teach kayakers how to navigate rivers. We would start with a slower moving river and train our way up to the faster rivers. If you are more experienced at river paddling, then just choose the river you want to paddle. Otherwise, start with level one and go from there. Here?s an example:
River level 1 ? Badfish, Sugar, Yahara or Crawfish
River level 2 ? Baraboo River
River level 3 ? Wisconsin River (with stopping for lunch/dinner on the way home).
State Park lakes Meetups
We have abundant state parks within an hour or so from us, so let?s utilize their lakes. Here are a few ? please add more!
Mirror and Devils Lake
Yellowstone and Blackhawk Lake
Twin Lake and Cox Hollow Lake
Mississippi backwater (lake) at Wyalusing
Lake Columbia ? during the new year!
Scheduled meetups will be the kind that is always scheduled once a week, every other week or every other weekend Sunday. We could be creative with this and have the weekday evening meetups at the same two different local sites and move the Sunday weekend meetup sites around. If you live near a waterway and could be an assistant to a scheduled meetup? then this may be for you. (Ron Inda and Shirley? ? Cherokee Marsh).
Just for fun? Meetups
Photo slide show evening(s) of trips and water ways folks have traveled to and explored. I would encourage anyone who has documented their kayak trips to share with the group.
