The "Labrys" is a double-sided axe that the Amazons were said to use as their main weapon. Over the centuries, many women have adopted the labrys as a symbol of power and independence.
Many women wear necklaces or earrings with a labrys symbol as a way to identify themselves to other independent women.
The labrys was resurrected as a female symbol of power and independence in the 1970s by a number of lesbian and feminist organizations. It's popularity grew when articles about its origins were published in feminist literature of the time.
