Wildflowers at Shenk's Ferry

  • April 26, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • Shenk's Ferry Wildflower Reserve

More details about this event will be added as we approach the date.

We're headed to Shenk's Ferry this month since spring/April is such a great time for wildflowers down there.

Here's more information on the location (note: the address listed at the location above is not accurate. Meetup.com requires I put in a physcial address but there is no street address for the preserve. The address is for the nearby campground so please don't use it for directions per se).

Carpooling

Since the shoot is at 10 am, for those interested in carpooling let's meet at the parking lot in front of A.C. Moore at 9:20 or so since it takes roughly a half an hour to get down to Shenk's Ferry from there. For those who are interested in carpooling please just email me and I'll compile a list so we'll do our best not to leave anyone behind. Also, please email me if you're willing to be a carpool driver.

Would it be OK if I posted some photos from my trip there the week prior? I wasn't able to attend the official meetup...

      Yeah of course no worries.

It was great. The weather held up well. Small flowers, but lot of them.

Anyone lose an eyecup? It's pinned to the sign at the trailhead. Couldn't make it hear until now.

    • Troy S.

Oh my you found it! It's mine

      April 26, 2014

    • Tim D.

Somebody else had found it and put it on the sign at the gate. I left it there, I would imagine it would still be there if you go back tomorrow.

For those that's going tomorrow, make sure to watch your speed limit. I was told by people who lives in this area that the cops are very strict about it.

BTW, the address worked fine on my built-in gps.

Stopped in on Thursday and more people there than expected... hikers and photographers a like. Suspect carpooling on Sat will be a good idea because of parking.
Road is rutty but no problem with our Ford Fusion. Leave your low to the ground Corvette home, lol.
GPS coordinates to start of dirt/gravel road:[masked]N x[masked]W
If you need an address for your GPS, this will get you close:
    683 Green Hill Rd
    Conestoga, PA 17516
Have fun, looking forward to the pictures....

    Hello Brian,

Actually, I used Google Earth instead of Google Maps and placed the cursor on what appears to be a few cars parked on the river side of Green Hill Road and read the coordinates off of the screen. The other end of Green Hill Road generates a different set of coordinates. Hopefully, I've got it right. If I didn't, you can smack me in the head with your Manfrotto (just don't ding the Nikon).

Thanks Rob, I wasn't responding to your earlier post, just giving people some fair warning based on my experiences using google maps and such. Thanks for the GPS.

    • Adam H.

I can attest to Brian's GPS troubles. Google Maps tried to navigate me in the wrong direction when I went there this past weekend. There are plenty of signs once you get close so keep your eyes peeled when closing in on the preserve.

Just as a warning, I would be wary of trusting your GPS to take you there 100%. I've had problems with Google Maps in the Southern end, and at times they point you to the other end of Green Hill Road which is not a good thing. Your best bet is to follow the directions on the Shenk's Ferry Brochure which can be found here: http://www.pplweb.com/citizenship/environment/preserves/holtwood/~/media/PPLWeb/Citizenship/Docs/preserves-Holtwood-ShenksFerry-Wildflowers-brochure.ashx

This will be my first meet up. looking forward to meeting everybody.

According to Google Earth, I believe the coordinates for you GPSers are LAT[masked], LONG -76.3666. If I messed up a number or sign, you may end up in beautiful downtown Bagdad.

I'll be there if only to see this "maroon hat with a gold B embroidered on it".

  • Adam H.

I'm thinking of heading to the preserve a little early if anyone is interested. I know parking is limited...

    April 18, 2014

Scratch that....I have an event to shoot and can no longer attend. Have fun everyone!

Are most of the meet-ups on weekends? I work night shift, but if you ever go on a Sunday afternoon or evening, that would be okay too. I'll just check out the schedule. I don't expect any special accomodation, just asking. Thanks for the welcome to the group, since I'm a newby.

    April 15, 2014

    • Blake Z.

Hello Craig, Welcome to the group. Yes, most of our events are scheduled for Saturdays. That scheduling meets the needs of most of our members. We do occasionally schedule events for Sundays. In fact we have one coming up on May 11 at Ephrata Cloister. Maybe we will see you there.

Any stipulations about tripod use on the preserve? Just wondering

    March 12, 2014

    • Brian

Hi Karin, sorry I missed this last month, as far as I'm aware there are no regulations besides being courteous to fellow visitors for using tripods (and I've seen them used extensively there before)
