What a great meetup! Everyone I met was very friendly, and I felt that I learned a lot simply by hearing knowledgeable Rubyists chat and debate amongst each other. The ZestFinance staff was also incredibly friendly and personable, not to mention they really know how to throw a party with tons of excellent food and good stuff. Also appreciated all the freebies at the venue as well :)

I really enjoyed the conversation about being a better developer! We should expand on it in a future

Two members from the Ruby study group are attending tonight who are both brandy new to Ruby but excited to get rolling. They both run Windows and are of course running into problem after problem. They need help getting a Virtual Machine set up running Debian so they can get their Ruby on.

Any volunteers willing to help with some Yak Shaving?? Maybe there could be a Yak Shaving track for people who are trying to get different environments set up. I need help getting RVM. My friend Kurtis is going to help me with that maybe tonight if there is a track.

I just saw this and I am personally excited because I run Ubuntu and was just sad that I couldn't update to the newest Ruby. Now I can.

    Thanks Ruby Weekly.

You asked us to write ideas down, right?... Well, I would love to discuss deployment options - EC2, Rubber, what configuration is recommended, basic orientation in the linux OS with focus on Rails. I am doing this for the first time, so if it's too boring for the rest of you, I can understand.

It would be interesting to hear about Rubber. I've never used it before.

    Here's a proposal:

    Title: Completing a 10k "run" with Ruby/Rails

Description: My recent experience getting to 10k reputation on StackOverflow in a little over 200 consecutive days of activity and why I think _answering_ questions on SO is a great way to learn.

Would a talk on metaprogramming in the context of a gem that I wrote (http://aviator.github...) be worth a speaking slot?

      2 · January 6, 2014

    • Alexander T.

      Definitely! Sounds interesting.

    Merry Christmas everyone!

We're excited to host LA Ruby @ Zest again. Just so we have some fun before the event, let's try to post and discuss the talk proposals here.

    1, 2, Automate!

What is the best way to approach a technical problem ? To solve it manually or to come up with the tool that does the job for you? It depends.

We'll look at the problem at different angles. Solving the problem on a small vs a large scale. Automated vs manual testing. We need to use every technique wisely since every approach has the different cost.

We'll choose the best tool for the job. But most importantly, there’s going to be a lot of pictures of funny cats ;)

Here is my idea. What do you have in mind ?
