August interviews: Birchbox founders and Gil Beyda of Genacast Ventures

We’re excited to be hosting some great speakers for this month’s meetup on August 22nd.
First, we’re going to be talking to Hayley Barna and Katia Beauchamp, the co-founders of Birchbox. Birchbox is a standout NYC startup, growing like crazy right now and, my favorite part, possessing a strong business model. Their customers pay $10 a month to receive a surprise box of beauty and lifestyle product samples, and Birchbox then upsells the full-size versions. We’re going to talk about the customer development work Hayley and Katia did to test their idea at the start, and also discuss their new business challenges now that they are past “product-market fit” and focused on scaling.
Our second speaker is Gil Beyda of seed fund Genacast Ventures. Gil is an entrepreneur-turned-VC, starting his first company back in 1982. He co-founded Real Media and was CTO of Tacoda. So far, he has invested in companies like Invite Media (acq. by Google), Demdex (acq. by Adobe), Packlate and others. We’re going to ask about his lessons learned as an entrepreneur, and his views on lean startup concepts now that he is a VC.
