Meeting Your Inner Mule

Have you ever felt as if you can?t take one more step, when every idea or opportunity looks hard, draining, and hopeless? There are times in one?s life when everything seems insurmountable. When getting up from the couch can feel as if we are pulling a piano up the side of a building. What is it that weighs us down and what makes us feel as though we can?t move.

You may feel your Inner Mule long before you see it or even know it is there. All of a sudden you don?t feel like doing anything. Moving becomes difficult. The mule had dug his heels into the ground and will not allow us to expend our energy. It is not interested in looking around and discovering what the world has to offer. It wants us to stop.
The mule usually steps in when we have been doing too much or when the demands of life have become overwhelming. It may also come in when we are overindulging and are feeling out of control. We need to rest or we need a new perspective. The problem with the mule is that once it stops it can be very difficult to get him going again.
We are not taught to honor this particular phase of the journey. In our society, it is the active principle that is revered and rewarded. Anything that slows us down or stops us is considered a hindrance and something that needs to be resisted or fought.
However the inner Mule offers us its own gift. It is not easily seduced by the call of the outside world. It is solid, steady, and tenacious. When we ignore this aspect of ourselves the Inner Mule can become especially stubborn and immobile.
If you feel like your Inner Mule has taken over your life it is important to acknowledge it presence. As soon as we really stop and honor its qualities it begins to respond. Then we must immediately do something physical. Any activity such as exercise or sports will get him going.
The Inner Mule gives us a moment to regroup and then slowly but surely continues to carry our dreams forward.
