Hike La Jolla Canyon with Lydia (Wednesday)

Hike La Jolla Canyon with Lydia (Wednesday)

Details

Let's beat the heat by joining the small animals and birds in La Jolla Canyon on this 9-mile loop hike with panoramic views of coastline and Channel Islands, phenomenal flower blooms in the spring, and a small spring and waterfall (during wet years), the main attraction are large swaths of native California grassland — some of the last remaining unspoiled areas in the state. There is a net elevation gain of about 1100 ft (inclines are easy to moderate).

There is a parking fee but I don't remember how much ($15.00?) so bring a cash or credit card. I am pretty sure the machine only takes a card but I just park along PCH. There is free parking on PCH but its at least 400 yards from meeting spot -- if you choose that, please arrive early to give you time for walk to parking lot. The trailhead does have bathroom facilities.

Directions:

From Los Angeles: after a long and relaxing drive down the Pacific Coast Highway (22 miles from Malibu Canyon), you’ll enter Ventura County and pass the so-called “Great Sand Dune.” Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. (La Jolla Canyon is 1.5 miles north of Sycamore Canyon)

From Ventura: Go south on PCH and turn left a couple miles after Las Posas.

Drive 400 yards up road to parking area. Bring hat, sunscreen, plenty of water and snacks.

Note:

I have missed Dean's weekday hikes and thought I would give it a go at the end of October. Dean was kind enough to post an old description for me because I am not very familiar with using this site. Also, I do not know what the temps will be for that week in October - I usually follow the weather forecast daily and rain does cancel the hike.
