The Forgotten Trails of Cheesboro & Las Virgenes

Details

Las Virgenes and Cheeseboro Canyons like you have never seen them beforehttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/f/1/c/global_14453020.jpeg (http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/f/1/c/highres_14453020.jpeg)!

This adventure hike arose from an exploratory I did over a year ago. We'll hike along forgotten ranch roads and use trails. It will include a hike over the eastern ridge of Cheeseboro Canyon and to the Baleen Wall along a forgotten and overgrown trail. We'll then descend into Upper Las Virgenes Canyon by way of a vanished ranch road. Much of the remainder of the hike will be on unmanaged and overgrown use trails.

If you click on and look closely at the picture above you will see the remnants of a gate but there are no trails here, but at one time 3 unpaved roads met there. Besides our group no one has been here in possibly decades!

This is a strenuous hike and will go for about 8-10 miles.

The Baleen Wall

Back Story

While pouring over some old topo maps of the Upper Las Virgenes area I noticed a couple of "unpaved roads" that I have never seen while hiking. I loaded the road into my GPS and went to the location in search of these roads. When I arrived at the site, there was no sign of any road. Not ready to give up, I proceeded to walk the same path as if the road was there. Later, just when I thought I was on a wild goose-chase, I came across some artifacts (see picture above) that confirmed the topo data (and the accuracy of my orienteering!).

This will be the second time here for the group. The first time we started at Las Virgenes. This time we'll start at Cheeseboro.
