Advanced Scala Meetup

  • August 5, 2014 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

A regular meet up for proficient Scala developers to share out their problems, solutions and experience to make for better code.

If you're looking to bring along a problem you're struggling with, code you want reviewed, or a library or presentation you want to refine, give us a heads up of what your looking to bring in the comments section below. If you have nothing to bring but just want to lend a hand, the more the merrier. We are limiting the meet up to those with solid Scala experience, if you're looking to learn Scala, then sign up for the monthly Scala Coding Dojo.

We will start around 6:30 o'clock, though you're welcome from 6:00. We can then eat pizza and break out into groups as soon as anyone is ready. We have the options of working in a large collaborative group, or breaking out into smaller groups depending on the kinds of problems that arise. The meetup will go till 10:00 at the latest, with drinks at the pub afterwards.

If you have any comments, please add them on the site.

Thanks to Mind Candy for hosting and providing pizza & drinks.

So I think that went pretty well. Next time we are looking at a couple of changes.
Maybe a couple of minutes demo time for each problem to be shown to the group as a whole.
Have the groups closer together to make it easier for people to jump between groups if they re not getting enough out of it.

Any thoughts or suggestions, post them here or PM me. Cheers to everyone that could make it.

I would like to start integrating state monad with Monocle (Lens/Optic library). I haven't used much this monad, so inputs will be extremely valuable :)

Here is a link to Monocle:

My blog post of one of the things I was talking about at the pub:
Things the Scala compiler doesn’t do - Impossible functionality that you don’t actually want

After watching Runars' scaladays talk about free monads, I have been playing with free monads/interpreters as a way of doing DI but managing state (i.e. a DB connection) is something that I haven't still managed to do in a proper functional way when you have many small DSL combined; if anybody has experience with that, I would be more than happy to talk about it :D

Miffed I won't be able to make this first meeting. No doubt the first of many. Have a fantastic meet up, and I'll look out for the 2nd.

I can't make tonight either due to a double booking but Sean Parsons will be in my stead. As he know approximately 1,000,000 times more scala than me this is a good thing.

Just a reminder: If you're unable to make it, please change your RSVP as we have a waiting list. Also I hope some of you have some problems or projects to bring along.

Currently I'm working on a way to validate and pattern match typed values from nested dynamic data structures, and am looking to make it 'nice'.

I also have problems around transforming dynamic higher-kinded types.

Feel free to post here any kind of problem you could bring along tomorrow.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
