Sharing Economy & Social Media

February's London Bloggers Meetup is all about the sharing economy, travel and social media. We have lined up some great speakers so far including:

David Randall, Airbnb

Sally Broom, tripbod.com

Bernie J Mitchell, The Sharing Economy Podcast

Reuben Sagar, hirespace.com

Join us for a discussion around how the principles of sharing are transforming the way we live, work and play and the importance of social media / blogging to how this sector develops.

We think this is going to be a very interesting conversation and welcome your questions for our speakers in advance and on the night too.

RSVP to tell us you are coming.

TWO hashtags to watch out for!

1. #LBMlive is London Bloggers Meetup on twitter

2. #Sharingeconomy is the hashtag on twitter for this topic

In case you missed it, wanted to kindly also share our recent London Blogger post where we discuss the emergence of task marketplaces in the UK, and "tasks" as the new employment sector"

    Hope you enjoy it!

I've just put a blog together for Andy and Bernie's London Bloggers site where I expand on the economics of the sharing economy. In particular I looked at whether supporting small business is good for the economy at large, a question that was posed on the night.

The topic was really, really interesting and the questions from the audience were insightful. By the way: I've never been to a meetup where I've managed to speak to so many interesting people (without actually knowing anyone). Thanks!

I too got lost and a bit chilly but nevertheless enjoyed the evening.
Travel is my thing so I found the speakers interesting and their businesses seem to exploit the good side of the internet rather than the have to do it all yourself (and then find you booked your tickets on the wrong day) aspect. I met some interesting and friendly folk on my table and enjoyed the free ale. Thanks guys

OK here is an honest review, from a first timer. Please take it in the spirit of honesty. As a blogger I attended because I thought it was a blogger’s meet up and we might focus at least a little on blogging. We didn't. The panellists were passionate and enlightening (which they would be expected to be, promoting their businesses), and there were a couple of good questions that challenged the collective "right on" perspectives of the panel – so I did learn something. However it would have been good to have had a panelist that didn't take the same line, and instead offered a different view from the front. I was lucky to escape without double pneumonia from a freezing, dim and rather depressing venue that almost verged on the sinister. As a “meet up” (and the venue and temperature didn’t help) it was rather cliquey. I have been to the Tuttle Club and several unconferences, where people really wanted to meet and talk – but strangely, not here. And I did try.

Thanks for being honest Neil, come back again and I'll introduce you to everyone. This is one of the most welcoming meet ups I have ever known. I'll say hi on twitter to you :-)

Its a deal - many thanks!

Thank you very much! Entertaining and informative presentation. Personally, I thought self promotion was at a reasonable level and mercifully little ranting and raving from the floor thanks to Andy's skilful leadership. ;)

    • Bernie J M.

Thanks for saying that Darek. Andy is a joy to work with.

      February 13, 2013

  • Robert A.

I thought it was great. Kai - it was free information and free booze, you have to expect a little self promotion, but as these things go that promotion was very minimal compared to valuable knowledge they 'shared' with us. Thanks guys.

Overall another good meet-up. Thanks to everyone who listened to my walking the tube for charity pitch. You can find out more about the walk on my blog http://randomlylondon.com or e-mail me at wrightlondon [at] gmail.com to take me up on my offer.

Very well organised (as always) with decent speakers talking about a complex topic. The speakers also covered a lot of different ideas fitting within the sharing economy so overall provided a great perspective of it's developments. The only issue that I found confusing was why a halt was put on the Q+A at the end. If a topic has been launched that provokes discussion, why disrupt it? Let it run its course. I'd have happily had little time to network afterwards if it meant thrashing out more ideas in a public forum...

The panel were just four people promoting their business. Very poor. No real deep insights, tips or tricks on blogging.

The panel session was interesting but too long in such an unwelcoming venue. It probably rocks in the summer, but last night was just too damn cold.

Really enjoyed the event last night although I think I'm still defrosting. Interesting panel, and I appreciated their candid views. The Q&A session at the end was particularly insightful. Thanks for organising. And thanks for the free beer.

Andy, Bernie, really enjoyed the event - both the contributions from the panel and the decent questions from the floor. Clearly we are at the start of something big, and no doubt it will have repercussions that none of us can imagine yet.

    All the best,

    Raj.

The latest LBM Audible podcast with Neal Gorenflo from Shareable.net is now live here: www.londonbloggers.net Neal introduces the Sharing Economy perfectly. A great way to swat up on the topic ahead of tomorrow's meetup.

As a bonus, I wanted to add that I'll have a unique no-cost SEO audit offer available to people at the meetup that both Andy & Bernie have approved. I'll give more details tomorrow night.

      Great Share Ian :-)

      1 · February 11, 2013

Just to put the value of this offer into context for everyone. If your site is one you profit from, it is common for SEO auditors to charge in the thousands for said offering. So this is an awesome opportunity for those who don't know their meta descriptions from their Panda's #justsayin

Bernie, would love to hear people's views on how best to establish trust among people who share, and what are the ways that we as businesses can ensure everyone gets a fair deal and a good experience using sharing.

      1 · February 8, 2013

    • Antony F.

Hi Bernie, I'd like to put forward the philosophical question of discussing whether a sharing economy really is a sharing economy. Many people talk about the delivery of free content/products, but there is always usually a sales/lead generation motivation that sharing derives from.

Can we really say that a sharing economy is a sharing economy when, in fact, the motives aren't altruistic in the first place? Could it therefore be suggested that such an economy is actually just fake?

It might also be worthy to pay homage to Aaron Swartz, a true believer in a sharing economy - and so much against the grain was he and his intelligence that the American Government & Capitalism drove him to suicide.

On a final note, people may find the book 'Free' by Chris Anderson of interest. It's the same author as who wrote 'The Long Tail'.
