Creative writing workshop

London Writers' Cafe is a community for writers who want input on their work. The majority of our group are writing short stories and their first novels but we're open to hearing any form of creative writing - plays, poetry, scripts - all welcome.

Anyone coming to a meeting can reserve a reading spot but there's only enough time for six readers at each one. Being a reader means you'll have ten minutes to read your piece and then roughly another ten minutes for constructive critique, comments and questions on your work from the group. If you'd like to read please post a comment below this description to request a slot. We'll always confirm readers a week or so before the meeting.

If you are reading, please bring at least 10 copies to be shared as you'll get more thorough feedback. We encourage all members to read but there will never be any pressure to do this until you feel ready.

Please note: Due to time limits, there are only only six slots per meeting so please check before you book, by reading through the comments below, if all the slots have been taken. We're very popular so it's very wise to book early if you want to read.

Hopefully that covers everything you'll need to know but for any burning questions, please email us.

Costs: £5 per session; please pay by PayPal when you RSVP.

Location: The Shooting Star is less than 5mins walk from Liverpool Street station, on the central Line. See google maps for details.

Take the Bishopsgate exit from the main rail concourse, cross the road, turn left at Dirty Dicks pub onto Middlesex Street. The pub is about 100 metres down on the right-hand side, past Nandos, and we meet in the function room downstairs.

Lisa I think you handled the situation with a great balance of delicacy and firmness. It was an appalling thing for the parents to do to the child, let alone the group, after all, what possible benefit was there in it for a group of adult writers? The mother had been clearly dishonest as representing her child as a 'friend', ruthlessly pursuing her own agenda, while the father was, I thought, unpleasantly aggressive to the group and the child. ("Speak up!") The kid needs to retreat to her bedroom, read widely and write without showing any of it to her parents as they will end up taking ownership of her talent, or perhaps I should say interest, away from her. But well done the people who smoothed it over for the child with praise. I was of a mind to take the parents apart, which clearly would have been unhelpful!

Yes, really good job of handling a difficult situation, well done. Really enjoyed the night, and thanks for all the useful feedback everyone - am re-writing already.

Just going through people's notes on my reading. Thank you all again for your comments. Lots to think about. In a couple of days, perhaps...

Obvious too all but no children, eg under 16 should be written into the rules.

No only was the poor little thing terrified there was very little merit in her work.

    Not impressed by her Guardians.

Meetup states you must be over 18 to join the site so it's not anything I ever thought I'd have to spell out. But clearly needs must!

Hi, you just need to RSVP 'yes' and you'll get a spot or be added to the waiting list. Alternatively, you could look ahead to another event that isn't sold out. All best, Lisa

Hi. I think I'm going to have to work late. I won't know for sure until about 6pm so think it's best to cancel and give one of those on the waiting list a chance to go along. So gutted.
