ML Research at Chalmers

Details

This meetup we're excited to have Fredrik Johansson (https://www.chalmers.se/sv/personal/Sidor/frejohk.aspx) and Olof Mogren (https://www.chalmers.se/sv/personal/Sidor/mogren.aspx) from Chalmers LAB research group (http://www.cse.chalmers.se/research/lab/) as speakers. They will give insight into current research at Chalmers. Two topics will be covered in particular.

What if…? ML & Causal Inference (Fredrik)

Inferences made by machine learning methods increasingly form the basis of actions in the real world. To learn how to act requires understanding of cause-effect relationships, and while often overlooked in machine learning, modern applications like personalized medicine cannot function without causal inference. A common problem arising in such settings is that of counterfactual inference: “What would have happened if X instead of Y?” We put this question in the context of machine learning methods, such as contextual bandits and representation learning, and discuss relevant theory and applications.

Recognizing Entities and Assisting Discussion Forum Users using Neural Networks (Olof)

Recurrent Neural Networks can model sequences of arbitrary lengths, and have been successfully applied to tasks such as language modelling, machine translation, sequence labelling, and sentiment analysis. I will give you an overview of some ongoing research taking place in our group related to the technology. Firstly, a master thesis project in collaboration with the meetup host Findwise, concerning entity recognition in the medical domain in Swedish. Secondly, the effort to build a system to give useful feedback to users in a discussion forum.

Findwise
We're also happy to have Findwise (http://findwise.com/) host us. They will provide food and drinks, as well as hosting us at their office.

Findwise are vendor independent IT consultants within search, findability and big data. They help clients find, analyze and act
upon information by providing strategy, custom search applications and expert guidance. Their 100+ consultants have worked with over 300 clients - local and global, private and public – in over 800 tailored findability projects.

Welcome!
