Great meetup, attendees, presenters and organisers. Keep it up!! I vote for a shorter speaker line for next time onwards. Starting and finishing on time will help to get more out of it.
Looking forward to next one. Chris Ward has seeded a nice new idea in my brain so I might come back with a request to present a short talk.

Great meetup: interesting topics, nice venue, great people and sponsored prizes too! I guess punctuality and timing needs to be improved on for the next one but I thoroughly enjoyed it

Glad you enjoyed it Tim. Yes we learnt some good lessons about timings so the next one hopefully run a little more like clockwork.

    Great night. But…

This is the second meetup I've been to this week where there was a high RSVP and low attendance. Seriously everyone, update your RSVPs, it's not that hard and is rude and disheartening to organisers who put a lot of volunteer time and effort into organising things.

    • Drew K.

It does make planning quite hard, but I understand things do come up. As a first time organiser I can tell you I'm always checking attendance numbers so it's never to late to update.

Good meetup, nice variety of talk topics. Prizes, stickers, food and drinks were all great. Perhaps a little long.. maybe limiting to 3 talks per night and any additional talks could be added to backlog for future meetups could be helpful?

    July 18, 2013

    • Drew K.

Had to start off the first meetup with a bang. But you're right less meetups next time so we're not as rushed.

Really enjoyed this - thanks to all the presenters (especially Drew for organising it) - good topics well delivered.

Hey All. Quite a long night for me, but I had an awesome time. Quick thank-you to our sponsors Github, Campaign Monitor & Maison Ama Lurra. Thanks to Guy the video man for the night & all our presenters.

Will do a proper round up of things shortly (presenter slides, prizes, code for vote sockets, call for presenters for next meetup etc).

Geez guys, this humble "demo game" I planned on building for the meetup is turning out to be a full fledged game. Hope I finish it in time so you all have something fun to do on the night :)

The game will require a Gravatar Account with a profile pic already uploaded ( http://en.gravatar.com/ ). Gravatar is a service that lets you upload a profile picture that's linked to your email.

Why go to all the effort? Because there are AWESOME prizes on offer.

So do it. Go ahead. I'll sit here and wait.

Thanks Guys, look forward to seeing you all on the 17th.

    Hi all,

I have a lightning talk that I gave during RubyKaigi 2013 which might be of interest to you. It is about using flash cards and spaced repetition to memorize almost anything. I, as a developer, find the technique very handy since I need to learn new things all the time.

Would you be interested in that?

I'd love to hear about this too: there are so many applications for this in the education space.

I've got an exciting demo planned. Works best if you have Gravatar!

If you don't already have one head on over to http://gravatar.com

    Hey Drew

Got a suggestion for you. I was just surfing Meetup.com looking for a 'Melbourne Web Designers' Meetup group, but was surprised to discover there doesn't seem to be anything of the nature. I am a developer myself primarily and would be keen to go to a Meetup / meet people that are Web / Interaction Designers, and general networking purposes like that, particularly to find people I could work with in a complimentary way, but I would also be interested in attending Meetups that are cross purpose groups (between Design/Develop), or whose purposes (ie. Design or Develop) varies from Meetup night to Meetup night. Not sure how that would work. And particularly given there is already other Melbourne Developer meetups, perhaps this could be an angle for you to consider. Perhaps a Melbourne Web Designers and Developers Meetup / Networking group, something like that. Food for your thought anyway. Cheers
    Matt

I definitely come from a Web Dev background so there will be plenty of WEB related talk going on (along with DEVOPS which is a new pet love of mine). I'd love to know how many would be keen on hearing about Design or Interaction, but those topics tend to come up naturally from time to time anyway. As this is only our first official meetup since I've stepped up as organiser plenty is open for discussion and I really value your feedback. I hope to see you there on the 10th!
