A Sonic Journey through Space-time
Details
Astronomy Nights are held on the first and third Thursday of each month that the university is in session. Astronomy Night activities are appropriate for ages 7 and up. The free program begins with an indoor planetarium show at the John R. Kirk Planetarium (tickets are REQUIRED for the planetarium show). After the planetarium show Smolen Observatory (http://www.newpaltz.edu/observatory/) will be open for telescope viewing only if the sky is clear (no tickets are required at the Observatory). Call the Observatory at 845-257-1110 to hear a message indicating if the public viewing has been canceled due to cloudy weather. Visitors can participate in either the planetarium show, observatory telescope viewing, or both.
Original music for the next Astronomy Night planetarium show will be performed live in the dome by local artists Jerry Alder and Mustafa Bhagat - aka “Arranged Marriage.”
“A Sonic Journey through Space-time” promises to be unlike any other event on campus! Join us for a tour of the night sky, focusing on the constellations of the Zodiac and their Vedic counterparts. See how different cultures were able to track the Sun’s apparent annual motion in the sky, and learn what it meant to them thousands of years before the birth of modern astronomy. Then journey through the Solar System and fly through the galaxy and beyond. Both shows will feature a special live performance by the experimental sitar and guitar/synth duo “Arranged Marriage.”
Free tickets will be made available to the general public on Thursday March 10 at 6:30PM at: http://www.newpaltz.edu/planetarium/shows.html Tickets will go fast so act quickly! Once all online tickets have been taken we will NOT be able to offer any more.
The first planetarium show will start at 7:30 PM in the John R. Kirk Planetarium located in the Coykendall Science Building. The second show will start at 8:30PM (please see the start time printed on your ticket). Latecomers cannot be seated due to the darkened environment inside the Planetarium so please arrive on time. Tickets presented after the start time listed on them are void.
