Microservices Hackathon #2!

  • Sep 13, 2014 · 11:00 AM
  • Osper Village

We had a blast last time building a working MUD in four different languages in the space of 7 hours - see .

So once again, let's get together and try building a microservices application (we'll decide what it should be on the day). We'll try to complete it and release it as open source - but more importantly, learn about different approaches to building software in new ways. You will need a laptop, proficiency in at least one programming language (sadly, not suitable for coding newbies), and ideas about what to build! Experience with microservices is emphatically /not/ required - if you'd like some background, start with Squirrel's microservices notes page which has lots of pointers to relevant information and experience reports.

Apologies that an event conflict meant I had to move back a week from the originally planned day - hope most of those who want to can still attend!

I've been trying to get this code running in a vagrant VM.
I've got it mostly there and figure it's easier to ask for help now. It'll play a bit of the game, dropping one letter but stalling when the letter lands. We resolved this on the day, right? Anyone know what's wrong with it?
    Code here: (branch `vagrant`)

Not sure, I accepted all pull requests

The code in the repo is written as we agreed it should work when all events arrive as requested. By the end of the hackathon we were running the letter generator with a workaround to generate letters despite no "words found" event after the letter landed. Thus modification wasn't commited in the pull request.

    had a great time myself.

For any python devs attending next uService-hackathon I've written a simple Topic Client. Hopefully it'll save us all some time.

It was very interesting. It was amazing to see how a project can evolve ("Hey! There is a useful message being published, let's subscribe to it as well!" attitude).

I may not be able to make it. This weekend is a bit double booked with #Hack4Good, but I'd still like to try to join for a while, to get some practice.
