The July Reel & Meal is postponed from its usual 4th Wednesday date to feature the movie ?Agora? the 4th Century historical figure who was a child prodigy and became a great female scholar, philosopher and head of the University of Alexandria in Egypt. From the film's website:

Winner of 7 Goya Awards (Spain?s equivalent of the Oscar), Agora is a breathtaking, English-language historical drama directed and co-written by Academy Award-winner Alejandro Amen?bar (The Sea Inside). The film is set in ancient Egypt under Roman rule, where violent religious upheaval in the streets of Alexandria spills over into the city?s famous Library. Trapped inside its walls, the brilliant and beautiful astronomer Hypatia (Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener) and her disciples fight to save the wisdom of the Ancient World. Among these disciples are two men competing for her heart: the witty, privileged Orestes (Oscar Isaac) and Davus (Max Minghella), Hypatia?s young slave, who is torn between his secret love for her and the freedom he knows can be his if he chooses to join the unstoppable surge of the Christians.

Freethought Today writes ?The pagan nonbeliever?s bloody death ? she was literally torn into pieces by a mob of monks ? during the sacking of Alexandria and its libraries by Christians essentially ushered in the Dark Ages.

?Hypatia is played by Rachel Wesz, a terrific British actress, who recently told the New York Times ?The hot topic these days is Islamic fundamentalism. But in ?Agora,? its the Christians who are the fundamentalists.??

Meet for dinner at 6:00 at Uptown Drink, 1400 Lagoon Ave, or at 7:20 at the Uptown Theater, corner of Hennepin and Lagoon, for the expected 7:30 curtain. Times may change.
