Building Awesome Communications Apps with Voice, SMS, and VoIP - Kevin Whinnery (Twilio)
Application developers typically think only of the portions of their user interface that happen on a screen, but your user interactions don't need to start and end there. What if your app could call users on any telephone and ask for feedback on a recent purchase? What if you could accept pizza orders via SMS, and send out a text message notification when the order is out the door? What if your support agents could take calls directly in the browser, with a customer's history right in front of them as the incoming call is connected?
All of these interactions are possible for web developers to implement today, using the Twilio platform. In this presentation, which will be 100% slide free, we'll live code PHP for:

  • Sending and receiving text messages- Making and receiving phone calls, and dealing with user input through DTMF tones ("touch tones" emitted by the standard phone keypad)- Embedding VoIP calling into web applications, allowing the browser to make outbound calls and receive inbound calls
Feel free to ask questions at any time and explore your own use case. Every app can benefit from communicating better with users, and I hope this presentation will help you think about how you can do that too.
