Re: [mostlygo] Maybe we have too many events?

You will find me a one-note person on this issue.

Give people what people want - a reliable place to play. Consistency is what matters. They don't need special events. They don't want to have to keep checking to see if something is happening. It doesn't have to be interesting. It just has to be nice Go at a good level for them.

Is consistency possible? I don't know that. The Go Center had 7 days of go and that clearly stretched the players too thin  and was costly to manage. How many days of go (held at one place or another) can the community support? 3 or 4 is my guess. But you need volunteers (plural) who will take on a day and make sure it happens. We don't have to keep getting bigger. We don't have to build and build. We don't need to keep trying this or that.

We need to set up a base for those we have and then see what is possible.

Looking at the results of the poll that 24 members have voted on,

One thing becomes obvious, even more so than how alternating sat/sun fat cat days are a source of confusion. People only want to go to one event a week. Plain and simple.

So now we have this problem of Fat Cat being "the one event in the weekend" unless it is overridden by something else. Which is even more confusing than the admittedly confusing setup we have now.

At the same time, we've also seen success from people suggesting things. I love the fact that the High Qi series has started, and want to encourage that kind of grass roots leadership.

I'm not sure what is the best path forward. So I'm going to put forward a crazy strawman idea for you guys to beat up.

What if I killed off the current fat cat days altogether.

No events on the weekends would be automatically scheduled. Then, with rare exceptions, we have a first-come first-served model of whoever wants to put an event up can do so.

If there's a weekend empty and someone wants to go to Fat Cat, go right ahead and post it. If the next weekend someone wants to play in a park, post that.  And we have a gentleman's agreement to have 1 event a weekend.

Would that be more interesting to you guys?

I need feedback to decide how to move this group forward.
