This meetup, for some, will provide a safe space to begin the journey in understanding how children with special needs change our lives - and for others, it will provide a place for advancing our knowledge as we continue our journey along side the special people in our lives.
Meetings will explore: special education law, parental/custodial advocacy, networking for change, networking for support, parental insight into diagnoses, special education services and placement in public schools (FAPE), parental comparisons of available school programs and/or home services (including Early Intervention), learning what other parents have done or are doing inside their IEP meetings, discussions on what to ask schools for & why its imperative to ask, a social group for parents and a place to create play dates for our children, sharing specialist or evaluation information (school eval v. independent eval)... and/or anything else special education parents, special needs children or supporters of the special education community would like to discuss.
In a Nutshell - A place to never feel awkward & never feel alone.
The Mission: Is to arm ourselves for the "battle" ahead by providing an environment driven by caring and sharing, pooling our resources & knowledge and taking advantage of our strength in numbers to better assist our children who are often so easily forgotten during the most crucial years of their educational lives. I am a mother of two small children on the Autistic Spectrum. I hope as parents of special needs children this group will make it its mission to ensure NO CHILD EVER GETS LEFT BEHIND.
THE LAST MEETING OF 2009 (RECAP ITEMS WILL BE AVAILABLE): Come and take a moment to get better acquainted with the Special Education Community at Large. Lets talk about our children's individualized needs right now (IEP, ESY, Services, etc.) and/or our children's individualized needs in the future. With a focus on legal understanding and educational advocacy. Read more
