The Christmas holidays have come and gone and it's now a brand new year. The worst of Winter is past, and the days are gradually getting longer. Spring is still a ways off, but to chase away the chill it's time for another MUGL.

This time around we have Peter Rodgers who will bravely dive headlong into the XML vs JSON fray. He's done some research on the matter (he is a scientist after all) and will discuss his findings. See if you can guess which side of the debate he comes down on:

Your JSON APIs Suck

In these days of micro-services we're presented with finer and finer grained data resources. A lot of these are represented as JSON.

But deep down you know that XML "feels right", but JSON "just doesn't", right?

In this talk we'll explore the fundamentals that need to be considered when choosing a data format. Why this has deep implications for APIs and what making the right choice does for real world systems in the age of micro-services.

We'll also consider why a general understanding of the underlying Resource Oriented nature of REST endpoints is essential to avoid repeating the train wreck that would be SOA2!

Peter Rodgers is the architect of NetKernel and the father of Resource Oriented Computing of which microservices are a subset. Peter started his research into XML and ROC at Hewlett Packard Labs.

This MUGL is at our usual place, the Theodore Bullfrog Pub near Charing Cross station in the upstairs function room (stairs at the back, come on up).

Also as per usual, there is free food and a free, private bar.

Try to arrive around 6:30 for food, drink and mingling. The speaker usually starts around 7:00 and goes for an hour or so. Afterward, more drinks and mingling until they kick us out.

See you there. And Happy New Year.
