Turner: Painting the Sublime, in Dialogue with Contemporary Art
The National Museum of Western Art, 7-7 Uenokōen, Taito City, Tokyo 110-0007, Japan, Taito City, JPFor this meetup, we will check out works of J.M.W. Turner.
"Opening new horizons in art history, Turner captured the nature of the world—including shifting light and atmosphere—at times with meticulous detail, and at times through abstraction. His works have been highly praised for allowing viewers to experience the 'sublime' of nature. Featuring over 80 oil and watercolor paintings from London's Tate—home to the world's largest Turner collection—this exhibition is a long-awaited major retrospective.
In this exhibition, Turner's works are reorganized by theme and presented in a loose chronological order. Furthermore, by juxtaposing Turner's paintings with contemporary artworks, the exhibition creates a dialogue between them, highlighting how the master's concerns resonate with those of subsequent artists." "Marimekko is one of Finland’s leading design houses. The name Marimekko means “Mari’s dress.” Since its founding in 1951, it has created designs that brighten our everyday lives with vivid colors and bold patterns, extending from fashion to interiors, tableware, and daily accessories.
Over the years, Marimekko has introduced more than 3,500 print designs, earning wide support across generations and national borders.
Marimekko’s creative process is rooted in a hands-on sensibility, resonant colors, and a free and positive sprit. Designers, artists, and experienced artisans collaborate at the company’s print factory in Helsinki to constantly refine new design ideas.
This exhibition illuminates the creative aesthetics of Marimekko through a diverse range of works and materials, including valuable dresses from across the decades, printed textiles, and materials related to the production process. A video installation by the artist collective plaplax introduces the print factory that is the heart of Marimekko’s craftsmanship. The exhibition also features a special display by guest designer Akira Minagawa." [from Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum]Location

Takehisa Yumeji—An Artist Who Defined His Era
The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, 3-1 Kitanomarukōen, Chiyoda City, Tokyo 102-0091, Japan, Chiyoda City, JPFor this meetup, we will check out an exhibition of Takehisa Yumeji.
"Takehisa Yumeji (1884–1934) was a multifaceted artist active from the late 1900s through the mid-1930s, working as a painter, poet, journalist, designer, and illustrator. Known for his depictions of women dubbed the “Yumeji style” and his retro-modern designs, he is recognized as a figure who epitomizes the “Taisho Roman,” a trend of thought or cultural events that conveys the atmosphere of the Taisho period (1912–1926).
His deeply lyrical works, which captured the sentimentality of youth and nostalgia, the atmosphere of the Edo period (1600–1868) and exoticism, and a longing for urban sophistication, resonated with the public through magazines, postcards, and exhibitions, sweeping the nation. Furthermore, through his pioneering work—which included designing everyday household goods that enriched daily life, producing books and magazines for children, writing the lyrics for the popular song Yoimachi-gusa (evening primrose), and documenting the Great Kanto Earthquake—the artist had a profound influence lasting through subsequent generations. Active across a wide range of genres, Yumeji can be described as a pioneering creator who bridged art and media.
Bringing together 500 works and materials from collections across Japan—including his renowned masterpiece Kurofuneya, as well as Japanese-style paintings, oils, woodblock prints, sketches, a wide variety of designs, and scrapbooks—this exhibition explores the diverse scope of Yumeji’s work. Beyond the framework of art, he was an artist who captured the spirit of his era, set trends, and was beloved by the public. We invite you to take a closer look at his work."
