YBA&BEYOND: British Art in the 90s from the Tate Collection
The National Art Center, Tokyo, 7-22-2 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo, 106-8558, Tokyo, JPFor this meetup, we will check out a contemporary art exhibition that showcases works by British artists from the 90s.
"This exhibition explores the dynamic evolution of British art from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. After going through the Thatcher era (1979-1990), a charged and uncertain social climate gave rise to a new generation of artists who challenged traditional norms and embraced bold, experimental practices. Many of the newer generation of artists who came to prominence in the 1990s were referred to in the art and popular media under the title Young British Artists (YBAs). Alongside other artists active at the time, these artists explored themes such as popular culture, personal identity, and shifting social structures. They worked across a diverse range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation. Featuring around 100 works by approximately 60 artists, the exhibition traces the radical creativity and groundbreaking approaches that redefined British art in the 1990s." From Kiyochika to Hasui: Ukiyo-e and Shin-Hanga Woodblock Prints
Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, 2-6-2 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-0005, Tokyo, JPFor this meetup, we will check out an art show that showcases Japanese woodblock prints.
"Kobayashi Kiyochika, one of the last ukiyo-e artists, began his series of 'Tokyo Famous Places,' in 1876 (Meiji 9), bringing about a major revolution in Meiji-era landscape prints. These works, depicting the expressions of twilight and the glimmering light in the darkness, are known as 'light paintings,' capturing the atmosphere of Edo through deep shadows. This perspective echoes the sentimentality of those who yearned for the fading vestiges of Edo and the desire of photography to document them. This style distinguishes itself from the 'Kaika-e' (modernization) style, which portrayed the city undergoing transformation through the vibrant colors of contemporary ukiyo-e artists, optimistically capturing the transformations of the modernized city. Shin-hanga (new prints), which aimed to revive ukiyo-e at the end of the Meiji period, inherited not only the techniques but also the sentimental appeal that Kiyochika and others sought to capture in their paintings, discovering new Japanese landscapes. This exhibition traces the history of landscape prints from Kiyochika to Yoshida Hiroshi and Kawase Hasui through the Muller Collection at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art." "Donald Judd (1928‒1994), known as a leading artist of the twentieth century, left New York in the 1970s and moved to Marfa, Texas, near Mexico. There he repurposed buildings for living and working, and established the Chinati Foundation for the permanent installation of his work and that of other artists such as Dan Flavin, John Chamberlain, and Ilya Kabakov. Each of the spaces Judd pursued in this way has now, after half a century, remain as Judd intended in Marfa. In addition to a selection of Judd's early paintings from the 1950s and the three-dimensional works from the 1960s through the 1990s, this exhibition introduces his spaces in Marfa through drawings, plans, videos, and materials. The works and materials presented in this exhibition allow visitors to discover Judd's strong conviction about the integrity of visual art and its installation, of which he wrote 'cannot be reduced to performance.'" Naked Meets Gaudi
Warehouse TERRADA G1 Building, 2-6-10 Higashi-Shinagawa, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, JPFor this meetup, we will check out a participatory art exhibition that showcases collections of the Gaudí Foundation.
"To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's passing and the completion of the Sagrada Família's main tower, the “Tower of Jesus,” an official exhibition will be held, starting in Tokyo. Architect Antoni Gaudí studied the laws of nature and shaped the beauty and order hidden within them. This exhibition reexamines his philosophy and innovation from a contemporary perspective, offering us living today an opportunity to encounter Gaudí's vision, feel the wisdom of living in harmony with nature, and reflect on our path forward.
Following an official offer from the Gaudí Foundation, Naked became the first in the world to sign an official licensing agreement with the foundation. Under this collaboration, the exhibition comprehensively displays an academically invaluable collection, including Gaudí's handwritten notes, original letters, his personal tools, previously unseen materials, models, and sketches. This marks the first time such a large number of foundation-held materials have been displayed simultaneously worldwide. Furthermore, through groundbreaking research utilizing graphological analysis, the exhibition deciphers Gaudí's inner world and creative thought processes. It is an unprecedented exhibition that delves into Gaudí's spiritual realm with unparalleled depth, fusing academic insight with experiential engagement.
Through participatory art enjoyed by all ages, this exhibition invites visitors to experience the allure of Gaudí's architecture. In an interactive experience where attendees contribute to completing a section of the Sagrada Família, visitors can tangibly feel how this symbol of “unfinished” construction continues to be built by countless hands today. It is an exhibition where the harmony with nature envisioned by Gaudí can be felt through hands and intuition." [from Japan-Architects]Location
